Using Wet to Dry Hair Straighteners

May 23, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

For many girls the wet to dry hair straightening iron is a really confusing tool since we have always been told that applying heat directly to wet hair will damage it. What is a girl to do if she wants straight hair but is short on time? Blow-drying hair completely can really take awhile, especially if you have very thick hair, and then spending time using a hair straightening tool and you are spending a lot of time getting ready. But with a professional wet to dry hair iron you can actually skip the step of blow-drying and go directly into straightening with only a towel dry.

Wet to dry hair straighteners are designed with special air vents, which allow the moisture to escape as opposed to it being stuck inside the hair iron with your hair causing unneeded damage that could take time to repair. A wet dry hair iron is the best professional styling tool available for a woman who wants to look her best, but is limited on time to make that happen. Not only can these tools straighten your hair as they dry it, with a little practice can also be used to put beautiful wavy curls in your hair when you want to sport a different look for a special occasion.

Pros & Cons of a Wet Hair Straightener

The wet to dry hair straightening irons are one of those items that sound to good to be true. They offer the benefit of cutting hair styling time considerably as you can skip the blow dryer and get straight to ironing damp hair. This sounds great to many of us who rarely have the time to spend primping in the mornings between work, school, kids etc..

However, we are constantly told that our hair is more prone to damage when it is wet, that we shouldn’t even brush wet hair so when it comes to using a heated styling tool on wet hair, what are the risks?

I decided to do some research on wet to dry hair straighteners, checking out everything from how they work to reading a ton of reviews posted by buyers, so that you can get the information you want and need without having to search the internet yourself.

So, whats the scoop? Here is what I found….

A wet to dry straightener works by using steam to remove excess moisture from the hair. The irons have vents to allow the steam to escape and evaporate.

With a wide variety of brands some claim that their iron will completely eliminate the need to blow dry hair where as others say hair must be 90-95% dry. Most users of these irons say from their experience that these irons only work on damp hair. I also read a few reviews where customers state these types of irons left hair extremely full of static and some even claimed that when they used their iron on their wet hair they felt a shock!

Many reviews commented on how well these flat irons worked for them in their humid climates as well as helped eliminate frizz where as others claimed there hair was left with more frizz and damaged their hair with breakage and split ends.

The higher the price tag on the hair straightener, the better the reviews although that doesn’t mean there were some nay sayers on the higher price irons.

Personally, if my hair has to be 95% dry to use a wet to dry hair iron I believe I may as well dry my hair 100% and stick with my Karmin Hair Straightener with which I know I’m safe. Besides, I prefer to blow dry my hair as this allows me to get more volume in my hair before straightening it.

If you decide to go with a wet to dry hair straightener, the best advice I can give is don’t go cheap and read reviews!!

How to Choose and Use Curlers

There are a wide range of curlers and rollers available. They vary in diameter, width and length and come in heated and non-heated. The larger the roller the larger the curler, the smaller it is the tighter your curls will be.

If you have short hair then smaller curlers will work best. If your hair is long, depending on the type of curl you want, you can use any size. The large curlers will give more body and smooth, loose curls.

Taking sections of your hair, smaller sections for smaller curls, larger sections for larger curls, gently twist the section and then starting at the bottom roll the ends around the curler making sure the ends of your hair are tucked in to prevent kinks. Then roll the curlers up to the base of your scalp. Be sure not to roll too tight so you don’t cause any damage. When removing curlers unroll them in the same direction you curled them up in. This will prevent your hair from becoming tangled in the roller.

Depending on the type of roller you are using here are some tips to consider;

Heated Rollers and Steam curlers – to prevent burning your hair always make sure hair is dry before using these types of curlers. Steam curlers are the gentlest on your hair but will take a little longer as you have to wait for them to dry.

Velcro rollers – because you don’t need clips these are great for shorter styles as well as for fine hair that breaks easily. If using them on long hair you may need clips to help hold curlers in place.

Magnetic Rollers – used on wet hair these curlers will provide a longer lasting smooth curl.

Flexi-rods and Hair Twirlers – these long, thin rollers a spiral curl without the use of pins or clips.

Plastic Mesh Rollers – these curlers allow hair to dry quickly and create smooth curls.

Snap-on Rollers and Brush Rollers – although these curlers hold hair securely they can cause hair damage and therefore are not highly recommended.

You may be pleasantly surprised… you may not have thought that style could be on YOU!

10. Would you share with us a few your best hair tips or insider secrets?

- Use a mousse/gel/ liquid shine combo (on wet hair) to get volume, control, and shine when styling.

- If mousse is too drying on your hair, try a spray gel at the roots and mid-shaft, and gel or wax on the ends to hold them together.
