Why do we care so much about our hair? I mean it’s just hair, right, so what’s the big deal? Why can’t we just wake up and walk out the door? Instead we have to worry about straightening our hair or making sure it looks presentable for the world. I’m just as guilty as anyone out there but I still think it’s odd that we worry so much about our appearances here in America. In Europe people hardly shower so we could probably quit caring so much, right?
Wrong. Hygiene is something that is so important no matter who you are or where you’re from. Not just washing your hair daily but making sure that you get a proper haircut at the proper time and keep it nice and trimmed. We don’t only use shampoo and hair scissors in America to improve our appearance; we do it to keep a healthy feel to our hair too. Why is this so important, you might ask.
In America people care a lot more about appearance and/or first impressions than people do in other countries. That’s the reason most people take care of themselves better here but what they don’t realize is that we can keep ourselves healthier and feeling better too by keeping up with our healthy look. There are a couple reasons as to how this is true is. One is because when we have a healthy trim for our hair every six to eight weeks, it gets rid of all split ends and problem areas that can become a pain to deal with down the road. This means that instead of standing and trying over and over to get your hair to cooperate in the morning, you could make it easy to style and a lot less strenuous on yourself.
Another reason it is important to maintain good hygiene is to prevent sickness. If you shower every day, you will keep all the bad/dirty skin cells away from your immune system. It may seem weird that a shower can keep you from getting sick but it’s true-keeping skin and hair clear of dirt and grime will keep a higher tolerance from cold and flu viruses.
It’s good to know that you can keep yourself healthy just by washing your hair daily. And who doesn’t want to save a few minutes in the morning instead of waste an hour on just their hair? These helpful tips will make each day of hairstyling a little bit better.
Buying the right shampoo is easy. It’s when you take it home and find that what you thought it would do it doesn’t that makes it frustrating! Ph balance again is important but no shampoo is going to “fix” your hair. Read the label before you buy, is it for your hair type? When you do use shampoo use the amount that is right for your length. If you have really long hair I suggest using twice as much than you would for shoulder length hair (about a toonie for shoulder length).
When shampooing always massage into your scalp with your fingers, not nails and let the shampoo run through the rest of your hair while you are rinsing. This will prevent your hair from becoming to dry. Do not shampoo your hair everyday, your hair has natural occurring oils that are good it. I realize hair that is thin and fine needs to be washed more often, but this is the worst thing for this kind of hair. If you can, on the second day try to put your hair up instead of washing it. If you do not use too many styling products on day one of shampooing, your hair will not look as oily on day two. Try to stay away from products that are a shampoo and conditioner in one. Do you notice that some people can go days without washing their hair and it still looks healthy and shiny? Well I know it is a little depressing for those who cannot, but after you shampoo every second day instead of everyday your hair will start to be “okay” with this. The first little while your hair may still look a little oily at the roots but this starts to diminish. Also to avoid excess damage make sure you use your styling tools, ie: hair straightener, curling irons and blow dryers at the correct setting for your hair. Too hot, more damage on thinner, finer hair types.
