Control Summer Humidity Frizz

July 24, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Summertime can make your hair so frizzy and untamed. Your hair shafts absorb the extra moisture in the air from the above average humidity and this creates curl in your hair, which can quickly become unwanted frizz. The best way to combat this frizz to keep your hair as naturally moist as possible so it is less susceptible to the humidity. Try and shampoo less if possible, and when styling your hair use professional grade hair tools which are safer on hair than cheap drugstore styling tools. Items such as ceramic hair straighteners and ionic blow dryers are specially designed to be easier on your hair yet highly effective at styling.

Taming that Curly Hair

July 24, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

If you were born with naturally curly hair there are days when those curls just seem to have a life of their own. Taming them on these days can seem impossible and it never fails it is on these days you need to look your absolute best. Some great tips for keeping the curl tamed include not rubbing your hair dry, but blotting it with the towel instead. Then use ionic hair dryers such as the kind professionals use so you can effectively dry your hair instead of just drying it out. Dry hair tends to have a mind of its own so try not to shampoo daily and take steps to ensure that you do all you can to not dry it out when styling.

Getting A Salon Quality Blow Out

July 21, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Many women blame their dry frizzy hair on their shampoo or even the weather, and sometimes these things do play a role in bad hair days. Another often-overlooked culprit of bad hair can be the styling tools you use. Using a cheap drugstore blow dryer can really dry out your hair quickly and this will create a base which is almost impossible to style. There is a reason why a salon quality blow out can make your hair seem so much more healthy and vibrant. Of course professional hair dryers do cost more than the typical drugstore models, but in the end you get what you pay for in performance.

Keeping Hair Healthy During Styling

Styling your hair can be hard on it if you do not take steps to ensure that your hair remains healthy no matter what hair-dos you attempt to create on any given day. Of course we all know that by using the right shampoo and by using moisturizers your hair will already be better able to withstand the rigors of styling. Many do not know that by using quality hair styling tools such as professional hair straighteners than your hair will also be better off than if you style your hair with cheap discount styling tools.

Aging Hair

July 6, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Not like we don’t have to worry enough already about our aging skin, we now have anti-aging shampoos and conditioners? Seems lately I find myself writing a lot about aging and your skin and hair, but these are the two most worrisome factors when aging. I asked women what they wanted to know about most and this is what they said,”Tell me how to get my hair and skin back!”

Well, heaven knows I would love to, believe me. I am not taking to kindly to the thought of turning…well, the age that I will be turning soon! And yes, if I had an abundance of money you can bet your last dollar I would spend some, lots, okay, a substantial amount on some “younger” looking methods, ie: face lift? maybe a little nip & tuck, just pull everything up. Don’t get me wrong, I am most of the time happy with my appearance but my mother was right, time goes by way too fast.

With all the styling we do, hair straightening, chemical treatments, and such just to look beautiful all day it’s no wonder we have time to eat and sleep. Did you know that after 30 most women’s hair will start to thin out? I almost cried when I heard this, I mean I only have a few strands left, am I going to be nearing the age of 80 taking the local bus down to my hairstylist only to find out she doesn’t have my color in hair extensions? Trust me this is a scary thought for our fine & thin haired people out there.

Well, as already discussed in the last blog post, vitamins and all the other suggestions made for hair and skin are essential to the health of our hair. But, did you know that you can now purchase Age Defying shampoo and Younger Looking conditioner? This is a tremendous break through!

Dr. Reed, a New York City Dermatologist says “Chemically treat your hair as infrequently as possible, and avoid anything that pulls on hair, such as tight rollers, ponytails, weaves, and braids. “Not only can they cause breakage, but they can destroy your roots permanently, rendering them unable to produce hair,”

Hair Extensions are a great way to add volume and length. clip-in hair extensions are a good way to add it when you want and avoid the above mentioned damage. Hair weaving is different than hair extensions, hair extensions are done in a much less hurtful, damaging way. (depending on the stylist and method she uses!)

Take 5,000 micrograms of biotin (a B vitamin) daily and use protein-laced styling products. As your hair thins, it gets weaker and less able to support its own weight, leading to breakage and loss. Protein fortifies the hair shaft. It can actually stick itself into hair and pull splitting sections together. Isn’t that amazing? Your split ends can be brought back together by protein!

For use in our forever aging hair I suggest using Nexxus Y Serum Younger Looking Hair shampoo and conditioner or Nature’s Gate Stayin’ Alive Anti-aging shampoo and conditioner.

Natures Gate- Stayin’ Alive Anti-Aging Shampoo Gently cleanses hair while helping protect against environmental damage, the effects of UV radiation and the stress of daily blow drying and styling.
Hair looks and feels revived and young! Retail $ 14.99, but I found it for just over $ 10.00 on line. Price is same for conditioner.

Infused with certified organic botanicals and a proprietary blend of proteins, its never too early to start an anti-aging program for your tresses.

I am going to try the Nexxus line and am quite excited about starting the Vegetal Silica/Nexxus hair plan. I hope you will join me and in three months from now I’d like to hear all comments, see photos and have a final blog on the use of the Nexxus product or the Nature’s Gate along with the Vegetal Silica/Horsetail plan.  We can see and share final results if enough of us do this together. Till next time, Good Luck,

Hair Care Shampoo

Buying the right shampoo is easy. It’s when you take it home and find that what you thought it would do it doesn’t that makes it frustrating! Ph balance again is important but no shampoo is going to “fix” your hair. Read the label before you buy, is it for your hair type? When you do use shampoo use the amount that is right for your length. If you have really long hair I suggest using twice as much than you would for shoulder length hair (about a toonie for shoulder length).

shampoo-techniques.jpg

When shampooing always massage into your scalp with your fingers, not nails and let the shampoo run through the rest of your hair while you are rinsing. This will prevent your hair from becoming to dry. Do not shampoo your hair everyday, your hair has natural occurring oils that are good it. I realize hair that is thin and fine needs to be washed more often, but this is the worst thing for this kind of hair. If you can, on the second day try to put your hair up instead of washing it. If you do not use too many styling products on day one of shampooing, your hair will not look as oily on day two. This Paul Mitchell Clarify product is a good choice to start the routine of washing every two days

Try to stay away from products that are a shampoo and conditioner in one. Do you notice that some people can go days without washing their hair and it still looks healthy and shiny? Well I know it is a little depressing for those who cannot, but after you shampoo every second day instead of everyday your hair will start to be “okay” with this. The first little while your hair may still look a little oily at the roots but this starts to diminish. Also to avoid excess damage make sure you use your styling tools, ie: hair straightener, curling irons and blow dryers at the correct setting for your hair. Too hot, more damage on thinner, finer hair types.

Hair Build-Up – How to Remove Product Build Up From Hair

May 12, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

How do you really know if you are using the right styling product. I know sometimes it can be hard to look at your own hair but here is one note that should be taken seriously…When you see a ton of flakes, piling up in your hair, this is usually from bad hair products not getting washed out properly, too much hairspray or simply can be a case of bad dandruff.

dandruff.jpg

Now I know this photo isn’t pretty but you need to see what other people see when you are standing or sitting below their eye level. Now, from my research these are some treatment shampoos that should help if indeed you have dandruff. First though, what I know about Head and Shoulders is this, it (don’t know if it still is) used to be so strong that if you put rollers in your hair then poured Head and Shoulders all over your head, rinsed the shampoo out, removed the rollers, your hair would keep the curl. If this product is strong enough to perm your hair, then yes, I guess it will get rid of dandruff, but in the process you would have BADLY damaged hair. So please try something else!

Here is an all natural treatment that you can do yourself.

This recipe is from “Dandruff Cure Recipes”

Boil some water and soak rosemary leaves in it. Let it stand for one night. Strain and add vinegar to it. After shampooing, wash your hair with this preparation. It treats the hair very fast. Make sure you eat lots of greens and take vitamin E and B complex supplements. Biotin in your diet is very important and is considered an important anti-dandruff compound. Eat foods rich in biotin: soybeans, oats, barley, corn, garlic, avocado, ginseng.

Now onto product residue. KMS Head Remedy, a purifying shampoo that gently removes oil, chlorine and product build up. Rosemary and fennel help soothe itching and provide anti-bacterial benefits to the scalp to leave your hair and scalp clean and healthy. KMS Head Remedy

It cleanses away residue and styling build up without stripping hair. Novel chelating agents remove excess minerals such as chlorine, iron, magnesium and copper leaving hair thoroughly cleansed. Bamboo remineralizes, restructures and tones.

Something simple that probably every person has in their home is baking soda. Mix about a tablespoon in with your shampoo and this will also strip your hair of chemicals. These products must only be used periodically, the baking soda method should be used maybe 2 to 3 times in a row, every 2 to 3 months. Same goes with the shampoos, too much use and your hair will start to dry out. Till next time, Good Luck,

Black Hairstyles

May 6, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Throughout the years I have heard of many different black women talking about how difficult it is to style their hair. Not being of African American descent it is hard to imagine the difficulties that are presented to them with everyday taming and straightening curly, thick, coarse hair.

black-hair.jpg

With the right hair products and a Karmin hair straightener you can achieve this look in no time. I found a website that helps in taming the common black hair: www.2hairstyles.com. It gives you product ideas, then if you refer to our website, My hair Styling Tools, it gives you the tools to achieve the look.

When shampooing your hair always just put shampoo at base of scalp and massage. Do not add shampoo to the bottom of your hair. Just rinse out and let the water rinse the shampoo out, while doing this the shampoo slides down your hair still cleaning it but not overdoing it where dryness would occur.

With my experience, (hairdressing that is) I can tell you this:

  • taming frizz serum must be used while your hair is soaking wet, I mean dripping all over the place. You will know the right amount to use after some practice.
  • if you don’t have a lot of time and you must blow dry, use cool air and dry in sections.

black-hair-section.jpg

  • Use a wide tooth comb or brush so to not rip through your hair
  • Once hair is dried heat up your Hair Iron
  • Separate your hair in sections. It is much easier to get a couple of clips and start straightening from the bottom back working your way around to the sides and then up. When straightening hair, run the iron down the section slowly to get the best results.

Once you are finished, in most cases, depending on the product, you should be able to comb your hair out and add some setting spray and be on your way.

I found that there are a lot of interesting sites for black hairstyles and these were my top choices;

Don’t forget there is such a thing as “overwashing”, do not “rip through your hair, start from the bottom and work your way up“, always try to just shampoo the roots, and the most important one of all, any kind of frizz reducer must be used when hair is SOAKING WET.
