Does Repeated Styling Tool Use Damage Your Hair?

March 26, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Women always hear conflicting reports on just how much damage can be done to their hair with the hair tools they use to get the latest styles. In some cases it sounds like your hair will fall out if you use a hair iron daily while in others they make it seem you are actually helping your hair by using one of these professional hair tools. It can be confusing and make it hard to understand what is best for your hair.

The truth is that actually both are true and the one variable that controls the outcome is the user of the styling tool. Of course poorly made hair irons that have exposed metal are never good for your hair but with well made quality tools such as Chi flat irons you can actually help your hair and not do any damage. The results you will get with these professional hair irons will be up to the user. If the user uses the hair iron on wet hair or too high a temperature setting of course damage will occur to the hair. But with proper use irons that utilize ionic technology and other advanced materials can actually help your hair look its best and be healthier.

Use a Ceramic Curling Iron To Create Sexy Curls

Curls are sexy, and if you’ve been blessed with naturally curly hair, you should appreciate how lucky you are. For those of us with straight hair, it is always nice to try something else out from time to time, and beautiful flowing curls are a nice change from your typical straight style.

When it comes to creating beautiful curls you don’t have to commit yourself to a perm that will damage your hair and leave you with a permanent head of curls. After all, you probably want to mix it up a bit. And sure, you could use a head of hot rollers to create your curls. But who wants to walk around with a head full of plastic for hours? If you want an easy and effective way to create beautiful curls, all you need is a professional curling iron.

When I tell you that you need a professional curling iron, I don’t mean that you need to spend thousands of dollars on a hair tool. What I mean is you must choose a quality curling iron that will get the job done without damaging your hair. A ceramic curling iron is the best choice for most users. Ceramic is a moisture conducting material that will actually infuse your hair with moisture as it’s curling your hair. What this means to you is that your hair won’t end up damaged by the heat and it will actually look shiner and healthier than when you started. That’s right, using a ceramic curling iron can actually improve the look of your hair.

Don’t be fooled by people who tell you that hair tools damage your hair. Those people are probably using inexpensive, low quality tools with metal barrels that will snag, burn and singe hair. And yes, if you use those types of hair tools, they will damage your hair. Choose quality hair tools that will improve the look of your hair.

For even healthier looking curls, look for a curling iron with tourmaline in it. Tourmaline is a naturally occurring element that actually emits negative ions. Those negative ions infuse the hair locking in moisture and sealing each and every hair cuticle, so hair lays flat against the head giving you a beautiful smooth curl. Forget about the frizzies and the broken looking hair that often results from over styling, with a curling iron infused with tourmaline, your hair and curls will never look better.

When you use a curling iron to create your curls, you have so much more control over how you want them to look. Do you want loose flowing curls? Or tight spiral curls? You’re in control when it comes to a curling iron unlike a perm or hot rollers where you are at the mercy of the rollers.

Don’t be afraid of curling irons, once you use them a few times, it’s easy to perfect the exact look that you are going for. They’re very easy to use, and the best part about them is that they are affordable and if you want to go back to your straight look tomorrow, you can.

Simple Tips to Care for your Tools

Let’s face it; quality hair tools are not cheap. When you purchase a quality hair straightener, curling iron or hair dryer, you are making an investment in yourself, your style and your hair. And you have to remember that despite the initial cost, purchasing a good tool will actually save you money in the long run because you won’t have to replace it as frequently and it will do the job right making your hair look great.

Yet, it surprises me when I see how some people treat their expensive hair tools. If you have an investment of any kind, you should take care of it properly and nurture it right? It’s shocking to me to see people through their hair irons in a drawer, pinching the electrical cords or wrapping the cord around the hair dryer before putting it away. These are just a few of the awful things I see done to quality hair tools.

If you are going to spend the money buying yourself some excellent hair tools that are not only effective in styling your hair, but will help it stay healthy and look its best, why wouldn’t you treat those tools well? Of course everyone will have a reason for mistreating their tools, but the biggest excuse I see is that people honestly don’t realize that they are harming their tools.

It’s not hard to take care of your hair tools so that they will last, and I have a few simple hints and tricks for you to make it even easier to care for your straighteners, curling irons and blow dryers.

* Do not wrap the cords around the tool. This is probably one of the most common things that people do. When they are cleaning up the bathroom or packing for a trip, they will wrap the cord around and around the iron or hair dryer. Don’t do this. It will change the shape of the cord and may even permanently affect the cord shape. It also can kink or bend the wires inside the cord. Also, if your tool is still hot when you put it away you could melt the cord.

Instead of wrapping the cords around the tool, control the excess cord by collecting it and using a Velcro wrap to tie it up. This will keep it neat and tidy and will not damage the cord itself.

* Take care of the cords. Besides bundling the cord up nicely, be very careful when it comes to other hazards for the cord. One of the biggest culprits for damaging electrical cords is drawers. When you have all your hair tools out on the cupboard, and drawers are opening and shutting, it’s all too easy to get a cord shut in the drawer. This can pinch and even sever the cord making your tool useless.

Also be careful not to get more than one cord wrapped up around each other. This is a safety hazard as well as a risk for creating knots in the cords of hair tools.

* Keep your tools clean. This may go without saying, but if you keep your hair tools clean they will last much longer and give you quality performance for years. All you need to do is give your curling irons or hair straighteners a quick wipe down with a damp cloth when they are cool to remove any build up. If you have a bigger build up, use a bit of rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth. Check out our guide for cleaning your hair straightener. For hair dryers, clean the lint trap at the back of the dryer to keep it free from lint and build up. It is not hard to keep your quality hair tools working and looking their best. With minimal effort, your investment in a quality hair straightener, hair dryer or curling iron will last for years giving you beautiful, healthy looking hair.

Like Mother – Like Daughter: Teach your kids about quality hair tools

They watch everything you do and imitate you, so it shouldn’t be a surprise when your children start asking you about using their own hair styling tools. The question is, what should you let them use? And when are they old enough to use hair styling tools themselves?

The answer to this question will vary dramatically depending on your child and their interests of course. But a general rule of thumb is to slowly introduce your child to your own styling tools when they start showing interest. You know your child best, so you should be able to gauge how responsible they are and what you should let them use.

A good tool to start with is the hair dryer. Because it’s fairly simple to use, even children as young as six or seven can begin using a hair dryer if they use it under supervision. It’s not likely that they will burn themselves using a hair dryer, however you should still use caution and be sure that you explain to your daughter the safety rules and things that they should be aware of. Be sure that she keeps the dryer a safe distance from her hair and uses it on a low setting.

As your daughter gets older and begins to take more of an interest in her own personal style, she may want to use a curling iron or hair straightener on her own. Generally when children are around ten or eleven, they should be responsible enough to handle these tools safely. Again, it’s essential that you explain to your daughter the important safety considerations. Things like turning off the tool when she’s done with it, keeping it away from any other items on the counter, being careful not to touch the surface area and keeping the tool away from water.

It’s usually a good idea to take your daughter to the hairstylist and have her explain to your child how to properly use the hair tool to create the style that they are looking for. This will give your daughter the chance to learn directly from the expert what she needs to do which will avoid frustration later on.

You may be tempted to buy your daughter a cheaper curling iron or straightening iron instead of a higher quality one. You may reason that she doesn’t need a high quality one because she’s just learning how to use it. However, think of it this way. If you purchase a high quality and more expensive tool for her in the first place – she will see better results right away, because the higher quality hair tools work much more effectively. Also, you will be helping her protect her hair because higher quality tools will cause much less damage to the hair, and in many cases enhance the health of the hair.

There is no point in starting her with low quality hair tools that are only going to damage and burn her hair. She’ll simply get frustrated and not be able to achieve the results that she needs with her hair. Start her out with quality hair tools and give her the education that she needs in order to achieve the beautiful hair styles that she desires.
