5 Steps for Sleek, Shiny Hair

November 11, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Sleek, shiny hair is easy to obtain with the right hair styling products and a professional hair straightener. Follow these simple steps for soft, glossy, touch me strands.

1. Apply an anti frizz thermal protector to damp hair and distribute evenly by combing over hair with a wide tooth comb.

2. Using your blow dryer, with a directional nozzle, blow dry hair sections of hair, keeping the nozzle pointed downwards to keep hair smooth. If you have wavy or curly hair, use a round brush to help smooth out hair as you blow dry. Once hair is dry, go over your hair using the cool shot button to help further smooth out your hair.

3. Clip the top and side sections of your hair up so that you can start with the back sections of your hair.

4. Taking sections 1 inch at a time, using your flat iron, slowly glide the iron down the section of your hair. Going slowly over your hair will not only keep you from going over and over the same section, but this also alows the heat to better penetrate your hair and smooth out locks.

Use the highest heat setting recommeneded for your hair as the higher the heat, the smoother your hair will be. Repeat this step until the back section of hair is done, working your way to the sides and then the top sections of your hair.

5. Once you have straightened all of your hair, take a polishing gloss or shine serum and distribute evenly over all of your hair. Remember, start out with less, as you can always add more, using too much shine serum can cause hair to look oily.

* If you have wavy or curly hair you may want to use a flexile hold hairspray to help lock in your sleek, shiny hairstyle!

How Often Can You Straighten Your Hair

August 11, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Many women use a straighten on their hair on a daily basis to get smooth tresses, and I often hear them ask at what point and time should they give their hair a break to avoid damage to their hair. Generally if you are washing your hair with a quality shampoo, rinsing it out completely, and drying your hair with a professional hair dryer your hair will not be compromised and should be able to handle a daily straightening provided you are using a professional hair straightener. By using high quality products and tools you actually keep your hair healthier than by using cheap products and for the most part you will be able to do a daily styling.

It seems like all the great hairstyles are always for long gorgeous hair, so what is a girl to do if she has short hair to work with. Some resort to hair extensions to get those long tresses that are all the rage, while others know they can be beautiful even with short hair they just need to add some style to the look. A good hair dresser can help you find just the right look for your short hair whether it is smooth straight hair from using a professional hair straightener or adorable curls achieved with a curling iron. There is a sure fire look that will knock everyone over with your fabulous short hair.

How do I keep my hair straight?

Many women are asking how to get their hair straight and have it stay that way. There are chemical ways to accomplish straightening that after long periods of use can cause considerable damage to the hair. Don’t get me wrong, some people are born with the advantage of strong hair that can be processed, ripped through, tugged on, heat ironed, curled to death, and blow-dried daily with minimal damage, however most of us don’t have this luxury. Many of us have weak hair where after processing of any kind can cause us to one day look in the mirror and want to scream.

For those of you who have the stronger, healthier type hair, I would suggest chemically straightening. A good stylist will be able to help you once looking at your hair and determine if this is for you. If this is not a route you want to take, a professional hair straightener is a great option. Hair straighteners give you the versatility of different heating temperatures as well as having the choice to go curly, wavy and of course, straight. There are hair conditioners and sprays that you can use to protect your hair from the heat elements for the more frequent user.

For the ones with weaker hair, chemically straightening is not preferable. I would choose a good hair straightener along with a good heat styling aid to help protect your hair from heat damage. Look for a hair iron with various heating temperatures and be sure to use a lower heat temperature with fine thin hair. To help maintain straightening results use a straightening product that helps to relax hair and then use the appropriate styling aids that are specially formulated for after hair straightening. Both salons and drugstores give you different options of products to use with straightening your hair.

Using these methods will shape your hair for the next couple days. I have heard many women tell me that after using straightening products before hair straightening, that even after a full night’s sleep their hair would still be straight! Women I talked to who did not use any kind of product before straightening found that even after a few hours of being out that the “flyaway’s” had already started. This was usually women who were out dancing or in a windy environment.

What most of these products will do is activate during the blow-dry process to help relax coarse, curly or wavy hair. Your hair will look smoother, shinier and silky while being protected and conditioned.

For best results use only small sections of the hair, start from the bottom pinning up the rest. I recommend starting all around the bottom from ear to ear. When you are finished section off a small portion again from one side to the other until completely finished. Ensuring your hair is completely dry will do less damage as well.

Properly Straightening Your Hair

It always surprises me how many women have trouble getting salon quality results with their hair straightening iron. Really using ceramic hair straighteners is fairly simple and part of the success is in the preparation of your hair in the drying process.

To start drying your hair properly to encourage straight hair blot, do not rub your hair dry. Once you are ready to start blow drying use a soft brush to comb your hair straight as you blow your tresses dry. If you do not already have an ionic hair dryer maybe you should consider one as these will help your hair maintain its moisture which will discourage frizz and curl that results from dry hair.

Once you hair is thoroughly dry then use a professional hair straightener with a ceramic coating to help your hair stay moist and encourage negative ions in your hair. Start at the root and straighten small sections of hair at a time. Clamp the hair iron on a small lock of hair and slowly move it in a gliding motion down your hair from the root to the very tip. Continue this process over your entire head taking care not to expose your hair to excess heat as this will damage it especially if you straighten your hair often.

It’s important to take care of your Professional Hair Straightener if you want it to last longer and continue to work at its best. When using your flat iron residue from hair products get stuck to the plates and this can cause damage to your hair as the product will burn with the high heat when you use your iron.

Here are some Tips for Cleaning Your Hair Straightener;

1. Always make sure your iron is off, unplugged and cool before cleaning.

2. Use a soft, damp, clean cloth to wipe the plates and dry with a soft, clean, dry cloth.
3. If product is built up in the edges of your iron use either a dry q-tip or your fingernail covered with tissue or a cloth to clean the edges. NEVER use anything sharp or pointy to clean the plates on your iron as this can scratch the plates.

4. For the best results, after using your iron, unplug it, let it cool and wipe it down (as in step 1) after every use. This way you don’t have to worry about product buildup which can become harder to clean the longer you wait.

5. Read your manual for other advice on cleaning and caring for your hair straightener.

To ensure that you get smooth, silky and shiny results from your hair straightener take care of your hair iron. It is also a good idea to make sure that you know what is important before using a hair straightener to help maintain the healthiest hair possible.

As women we all want a perfect hair day everyday and we want it to be quick and easy to achieve too. Well, we can have our cake and eat it too with the right tool. A hair straightener can be a girl’s best friend if she knows all of the benefits to owning and using one.

So why should you own a hair straightener? Let me count thy ways…

1. You can curl and flip, add waves, use it for sophisticated up-do or casual everyday styles.

2. Forget frizz! Weather your hair is curly or straight you can still suffer from frizzy hair. A hair straightener works to seal the hairs cuticle and rid of frizz leaving your hair smooth.

3. You can add shine and have healthier looking hair with a hair iron as well. In much the same way you rid of the frizz, sealing the cuticle will give the appearance of smoother softer strands and add shine.

4. Turn up the volume! Adding volume to any length of hair with a flat iron is simple.

5. Save Money! If you own a good hair straightener you will no longer need all of those styling creams, anti frizz serums, gels and so on. All you will really need is a styling cream, spray or lotion to protect hair from heat styling and a good hair spray which is handy to set your completed style.

6. Save more money! Since you can create curls, waves and add volume with a flat iron what other tools other than a hair dryer will you really need?

7. With some practice a hair straightener quickly becomes a fast and easy way to achieve different styles day in and day out. You can have great looking hair everyday without the hassle and the time some other styling methods can take.
