Hair straighteners, also known as a flat iron, hair iron or straightening iron work to straighten and smooth out curly, wavy and kinky hair. But just exactly how? Much like a clothes iron works to smooth out creases and folds in your clothes, a hair iron smooths out the wave and curl in your hair by using the combination of high heat and pressure.

The high heat and flat plates on a straightening iron work to reshape your hair. When clamping your hair in between the two heated plates the combination of the heat and pressure work together to flatten and smooth out kinky hair.  Like a curling iron is used to bend and curl the hair with a round barrel and high heat, a hair flat iron uses two flat plates to straighten and smooth out your hair.
