Scary, Sketchy Scissors

Have you ever heard of someone trying to give themselves a haircut or a friend of theirs doing it out of their own home for them? Although this is typical and has become more popular as things have gotten more expensive, it is a bit dangerous. Truly, the only person who should be allowed to cut your hair is your personal hairstylist. You know, the one who actually went to school and studied to how to do this for a living? She’s the one person you should be able to trust that will always do the right job with your hair.
When you put the trust of your hair in someone’s hands that has not had proper training, you could be making a big mistake that will take a while to fix. This is because the tools they use are not always top of the line like hairdressers’ tools. The scissors that a hairdresser uses are specifically manufactured and sometimes only available to those who have a license to cut hair. If your friend is wanting to cut your hair and she doesn’t have a license, it will be very hard for her to find a good quality pair of scissors.
If she can’t find a good pair, she isn’t going to be able to perform well on hair. Also, hair scissors are extremely expensive and someone who doesn’t make enough money may not be able to afford one of the best kinds of shears . Unlike a hairdresser, your friend might not have any experience either. This is never good because you’ll want the best results on your hair and if it gets cut with the wrong kind of hair scissors, you may have damage to your hair.
Keeping a good cut can be difficult since hair grows over time and needs a regular trim. When you go for a new haircut, be sure you go to someone you trust whom you know will have quality shears, not scary ones. Also, keep your hairdressers consistent. Don’t go to a professional one day and then have a friend do it six weeks later. Always make them explain what they will be doing with your hair so that you can tell if they know what they’re doing.
Hair Scissor Cramping
March 25, 2012 by kgood · Leave a Comment
If you’re a hairdresser who specifically works with cutting everyday in a basic routine, you know exactly how it feels to get sore hands. Especially women or men who have worked in this industry for years and years. It is absolutely no fun when you’re cutting away at someone’s hair and all of a sudden you loose all feeling in your hands because they become paralyzed by cramps. It may even be so painful that you have to stop and massage your hand for a minute or two. Taking breaks from your hair scissors usually isn’t a great sign and it may begin to annoy a client who is there for a quick trim.
Fortunately, there are a few ways to help you cut down and maybe even stop the cramping. Some people think the only way to cure the arthritis pain is to either go on a specific medicine or to go to physical therapy for special treatment. The thing is, you really can do those couple of methods. The only thing is, they’re going to cost you a fortune in the amount of time you spend trying to cure yourself. And what if they don’t even work? Then you’re out hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars! Here’s a couple things to try before you spend your life away on medical bills.
First of all, try a new pair of hair shears. Maybe your shears are too old and you’ve worn the comfortability out of them. The only way to know is to ask a few other friends who are hairstylists if you can borrow a pair of their shears for a day. Try cutting a client’s hair with their shears and see if they are anymore comfortable for you. If you notice a big difference, you may need to start looking for a new pair of shears to get your hands on (no pun intended).
On the other hand, maybe you don’t notice a difference at all and maybe you still feel pain in your wrist or fingers. This is a sign of something completely different than the fact that you need new shears. The problem is that you need to give your tired hands a break. Your first move could be to stop overbooking your schedule. Start by going through your planner and reducing each work day by one haircut appointment. This will at least give you a couple hours in the day here and there to play with the rest of the appointments and adjust them so you can have some comfortability.
Next, if this doesn’t cut down on the soreness, try to cut out another appointment and also begin doing some daily exercises. There are so many easy remedies that you can do at home. Instead, most women spend hundreds of dollars to see a doctor who says “you have arthritis. Twirl your wrists in circles for thirty seconds and you’ll be good.” Don’t do that, just take these few exercises and do them on your own time at night after each work day is done. Twirl the wrists, extend them toward the sky and toward the ground a few times. Don’t do any exercise with weights when you do this because it will strain the muscles that you are trying to build up. Go easy on your wrists for the next few weeks as well. This will help reduce the stress put on the wrists and cut down on some soreness.
Each of these steps are so easy and could save you so much money if you ever get pain in the wrists. Try these methods before you go to a doctor or specialist and give them hundreds of your hard-earned dollars. Give it some time too; don’t try these methods for two days and give up to go to a physical therapist.
Give Up Boring Cuts

I grew up with a hairstylist whom my family was very devout to and also served as a second mom to me. I have never gotten a haircut from anyone other than my long-time stylist. I have mastered exactly how she works toward cutting hair and the exact tools she uses in the process. I have seen her in action so many times that sometimes I swear I could be her. But recently, I watched a friend perform a cut on a client and realized there are so many more tools available for stylists. It was like I came out of my sheltered styling life that I was living.
Although I’m not a hairstylist myself, Jeanette (my hairdresser) has always told me the exact tools that she uses on my hair and all the things I need to know about her process of styling. Since I have grown up watching her give cuts, I haven’t known there to be any other way to cut someone’s hair. It was amazing to me to see how much there is to offer in the world of hair salons and styling besides just hair scissors and hairspray.
My friend began her process with a fresh wash. She then moved over to her cutting station where she began her actual haircut with the professional shears. The shears she used were very high-profile and glided right through the client’s hair. This part of the process is the only part I’ve ever seen take place. The next part was the big surprise for me; my friend got out her “texturizing shears” and began creating layers upon layers of hair and removing excess bulk in the client’s hair. After she got all of the texturizing done, she moved on to the bangs. She styled this part of the hair but using a razor and running it through the ends of the bangs to take off split ends and excess bulk, once again.
I, of course, have heard of texturizing shears and a razor but I had never seen them in action, so I had never known the performance they gave. I was truly amazed by these two tools and all they had to offer. If you were in the same position as me and have never really had anything done to your hair other than a trim every time you visit your stylist, it’s time to get rid of the boring cuts. Next time you get a haircut, make it a cut, not just a trim, by asking your stylist to use her texturizing shears and razor to help blend some new layers and make your hair healthier and lighter on your shoulders.
Why Do We Have To Use Different Scissors?
February 18, 2012 by kgood · Leave a Comment
There are a whole variety of types of scissors we need to use if we’re hairdressers. For example, one of the best lines of shears in the country, the Kamisori shears, have been known for their many different types of scissors that they sell. Some of them have thicker blades and some of them have thinner, sharper blades. Many people wonder what the big difference is between these kinds of cutting tools and why we have to use so many different type? This depends on the kind of textures being cutting.
Kamisori sells only the best of the best, but that doesn’t mean they only sell one kind of hair scissor. They sell many different kinds to accommodate the type of hair that will be cut. For thick and coarse hair, there is a kind of shear called the Ryu. This pair has been rated five stars and has received two different awards for its spectacular performance. One of the best features is the versatile blades that allow you to cut thin hair but are mostly designed for thick hair.
The Butterfly shears have been designed to give a nice and smooth cut, no matter what type of hair you’re dealing with. These are the perfect example of “all-around” kind of scissors and have been given six stars for this. These are handmade shears and have been recommended to those with hand and shoulder fatigue. The rings on the handle of these hair scissors are designed to adjust for ring inserts that provide more comfortability. This pair really keeps the hairdresser in mind while giving a great cut to the client with its diversity of a performance.
Most people get their hair washed before cutting because wet hair can sometimes be easier to cut and/or trim. For others, it may be a quick trip to the salon while they run around with their busy day. If they have no time to get a wash before a cut, Kamisori has designed a great shear for their hair: the Teuton. It has been hand-crafted so that those who prefer dry cutting over wet can get just the results they want. So what’s the difference? The hardness of the steel has been adjusted to give better results and a higher quality cut since the hair is dry.
For all different types of hair, there is a different kind of hair scissor. Accommodating your hair’s texture is what Kamisori loves to keep in mind when designing their products. The idea of a variety of shears to give a great performance is what everyone is looking for when they are shear shopping. Keep this in mind the next time you look for a new pair of shears!

Using The Right Scissors To Prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
October 15, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a very real danger for anyone who does a repetitive task with their hands for several hours a day, and this does include the hairstylist. Though it may not seem too repetitive such as typing cutting hair is a constant motion for the hands and wrists, which makes a hairdresser susceptible to this medical issue. Of course just as with typing having the proper tools will prevent this from ever becoming an issue for the stylist on the job daily. Having professional hair cutting tools that are ergonomically designed to ward off this problem will reduce the strain on your body and make getting your job done a real easy task.
Saving Money By Getting The Best Scissors
October 8, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment
Many new hairdressers sometimes try and cut some corners on their hair styling tools just because they are on a limited budget while they are getting their clientele built up. One corner they should never cut is the quality of their scissors. By opting to get a pair of shears, which are made from lesser quality steel they in the long run will end up paying more money to have, those scissors sharpened more often. Professional shears stay sharp longer so sharpening is needed less often saving money for the new hairdresser who needs to maintain a quality pair of shears to get the best cuts possible to develop the reputation as a top stylist.
