What To Do With A Bad Cut

May 24, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Have you ever gone to your hairstylist and told her to do a cute celebrity-inspired hairstyle? Next thing you know you look in the mirror at yourself and your hair looks completely different from the picture you showed her. This is one of the worst feelings I’ve ever experienced with getting my hair cut. Getting the cut you want is crucial because it has to look this way every day and if you can’t even appreciate your own hair, what can you appreciate? Here’s what to do when you receive a “grade F” haircut.

Say you give a picture of Victoria Beckham’s short and stacked in the back look to your stylist. This cut is extremely hard to achieve because her hair tends to drape down next to her ears and get shorter around the neckline as you go toward the back. Getting everything even and symmetric can be difficult but that’s what a hairstylist is there for. If she does the cut wrong it won’t make her clients happy and that includes you.

When she begins with the hair shears, you should be very specific and tell her exactly what you want in detail. Make sure she knows exactly how you want your look to be, from color to cut. Sometimes my problem is that when I’m finished getting my hair done, it looks great and I couldn’t do it any better. But the next morning when I shower and get ready to style my hair by myself, it doesn’t look as good as it could and I end up not being happy. After showering and getting the styling done, I realize it’s not the cut I was looking for and I begin to worry about what to do next.

When I get a cut that I don’t like, I have found there to be a couple different solutions- I can either have her fix it or deal with it until it grows back out. If I decide to get it fixed, I will go to my hairdresser and explain exactly what I don’t like about my cut (again with lots of detail!) When she’s done fixing the hair, I will ask if I can style it myself to make sure it looks just how I like it. If it does, then I’m happy and the problem’s solved. If I decide to wait and let it grow out a bit, then I usually end up wearing it in ponytails or finding a way to make the bad cut less obvious.

Whether the cut is uneven or the color doesn’t look light enough, you can guarantee that your reaction won’t be positive. If you get a bad haircut, you can think of these couple solutions and make the experience a good one. No problems will occur if you have a solution in mind. And don’t forget to be very specific in the first place so you don’t get too bad of a cut that makes you upset with your hair.

A New Way To Style Hair

May 23, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

During the summertime, the dark get darker and the blondes get blonder. Hair begins to change quite a bit when the sun shines during the day and I don’t mean the cut. For those who have a harder time getting their hair to gain better style in the summer, there are easy ways to solve that problem.  There are plenty of ways to change up your look in the summer. You can lighten things up or mix up the texture to match the hot weather. Surprisingly, you can do so without the use of hair shears!

For those who have darker hair, getting your hair to lighten up isn’t always easy. With the help of some home solutions, you can do it. Begin by grabbing a simple spray bottle that you would use to dampen your hair. Empty any liquids from the bottle that may be inside and replace the liquid with lemon juice. You can find this at any grocery store and it doesn’t have to be real juice from real lemons- just buy it in a container. Next you’ll want to add water to your spray bottle to mix up a solution. If you don’t add water, the juice itself will dry out your hair and cause severe breakage because of the strong amount of acid in the juice. After you have your solution mixed, you are ready for some fun in the sun! Spray it throughout your hair and enjoy this home remedy which will lighten your hair in no time!

If you’re ready to mix up your style for some fun in the sun, grab your spray bottle again. With this home solution, you can get a beachy wave look without having to actually go to the beach. Your solution will consist of salt and water and that’s all! It’s a very simple process too- some people add some sort or product as they do this so they can get a little bit of hold to keep the waves all day but it’s not necessary. Mix up your salt and water very well in your spray bottle so that everything is in an even solution. Next bend over and flip your hair upside down so you can scrunch it right. Spritz your salt water solution evenly throughout your hair and begin scrunching sections of the hair. This is perfect because it’s just like you stepped out of the ocean with beachy waves.

Now that you know the tricks to get great hair, try them out at home. Your hair will thank you when you style your hair each day and get compliments from others. However, whether you lighten your hair or make it wavy, you do need to make sure you use water  with each of the two at-home solutions. If you don’t add water, lemon juice and salt can both damage hair permanently. As long as you dilute each solution slightly, you should be safe to get your hair in style for the summer- and without the use of shears!

Hair That Constantly Grows

When we have long hair, sometimes we think we want to change it up and get a new hairstyle. That’s when we go to our stylist and tell her to chop all our hair off to about chin-length. At first we think that shorter styles are more fun and easy to take care of instead of long hair. Then after a while we begin to get sick of styling it the same way day after day and not being able to put it in a ponytail or style it any other way than just straighten it. Now is the time when we begin to grow our hair out.

For some, the process of growing out your hair can be easy because of the growth rate. For others, it may be a little more difficult; their hair might have a little growth problem. Therefore, their hair can’t grow very fast. That is why they find it more difficult to style their hair after so long, because they can’t grow it out and it tends to look sloppy. They may need a little help to spurt their hair growth and get it to look long and luscious like it used to.

One of the best ways to get your hair to grow longer is to get it trimmed regularly. You may have heard this before and it may seem hard to believe, but hair truly does grow longer when it has a little help from your stylist and her hair shears. Getting trims regularly can help spurt a little growth because it clears out all split ends that begin to develop in your hair after so long. With the help of shears, you can eliminate these split ends that act as plugs to your growth and the hair can breathe enough to grow. Just remember to do this regularly so that you can grow it faster and longer.

Another big part that helps the hair grow fabulously is wearing your hair in simple styles. For example, if you straighten or curl your hair everyday, you are creating more split ends because of the application of heat. Instead, try showering in the morning before school and throwing your hair up into a flirty ponytail. It will keep your hair out of your face and can still look cute and fresh each day. Be careful not to tie a ponytail too tight; it will only pull on the ends and can create split ends. Try putting a little gel in the hair to get some bouncy curls.

The normal routine for some girls before they go to bed is to brush their hair over and over until it looks and feels like silk. Smooth hair is what every girl wants, right? The only problem with this is that it creates frizz and and stops it from doing its thing to grow. The less you brush your hair, the more it can flow and extend its length.

Basically the main step in getting your hair to flourish and grow beautifully is to prevent split ends. Split ends and sloppy hair follicles are the main things that keep hair from growing out. When you perform these few steps and follow them each day, you will notice a difference in the growth rate of your hair. Also remember to live a good lifestyle by drinking lots of water and by eating the right foods.

Spring Transformation Cuts

March 9, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Bust out the hair shears, it’s time to get rid of your boring winter hairstyle and bring out a fun new ‘do for the new season. Spring needs a little splash of fun and what better way to bring out your fun side than to get a fun new cut. No matter how much time it takes, it is definitely worth the time and effort. Your final transformation in the end will be enough proof that the time and money are worth the investment.

Some of the easiest styles to perfect are during the spring season, especially the early spring time. This is because the humidity in the air is beginning to change in the early part of spring, so you’re catching the frizz and damaged ends right at the perfect time. It’s much easier to cut hair in the transition of seasons rather than in the middle of the summer when the hair is filled with frizz and bulky ends that have been damaged by humidity. Use this to your advantage when you get your new cut for springtime.

Some of the hottest trends in hair right now are being drenched with shine and glam. One of the biggest trends of spring this year, 2012, is to have “glistening hair” according to Harper’s Bazaar. Whether you long and bouncy curls or a short and pin-straight bob, your hair could definitely fit in this spring when its paired with some shine. To complete this look, buy yourself a fresh trim from your hairstylist to start out and be sure she cuts off all of the damaged ends. The best part of this spring trend is that you don’t have to use your shears all that much. As long as your stylist gets rid of the dead ends in your hair, you can just get by with a trim and finish it off with your shining serum.

On the other hand, some girls do a completely new look for their spring/summer cut and are more than happy to lose tons of their locks. If you’d be interested in doing something like this to keep cooler in the awful humidity, there are a few easy and simple steps to follow. One piece of advice to start out with is to put this project into the hands of a professional. If you usually give yourself at-home trims, do not trust yourself to perform a spring transformation style like this.

A couple of fun trends for getting hair all cut off include the pixie cut, and the short Victoria Beckham style. These styles are very easy and fun to play with as long as you keep it thin and edgy. With a pixie cut, you should always be looking for choppy and extremely short so that the ends are fun yet easy to take care of each day. This is one of the easiest styles of summer/spring because it has the least amount of hair and is easiest to style.

As for the Beckham bob, you need the help of your stylist to get a really good angle. Start with extreme layers that stack up the back of your head of hair. Make sure she keeps it light and thin so it’s not an overbearing process to style it each morning. The point of this cut is to accentuate your cheek bones and give a little volume to the roots of your hair. To do this, have your stylist bring the sides of the bob down to the ears and cut them at an angle so each side stars at the stack behind the head and “diags” all the way down to your earlobes or longer (your choice). Edgy is always fun for spring and it’s totally in this year!

Whether you plan on getting all your hair chopped off, or just getting a quick trim to keep cool for the spring/summer seasons, these ideas are sure to help. With funky bobs to long and “glistening” hair, you are sure to get a great look that will turn heads this season!

Trashy Vs. Classy At Formal Events

February 23, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Recently, my high school held a little event we like to call winter formal. This is just one of three of the craziest times of the year for high school students. Hallways are filled with conversations about spray tans, dresses, and most importantly the perfect hairstyle! For homecoming, simple styles with straight or loose waves are more common for girls’ hair. Winter formal and prom are two completely different stories from homecoming, though.

Dances like winter formal and prom aren’t just events for girls to show up wearing a ponytail; this is one day in the school year where a girl can actually get glammed up with lots of makeup and huge hair without being judged…unless someone brings out her inner trashy! Time for the fashion police to begin handing out some fines.

When you walk into the school (or wherever else your event may be held) you want eyes to be on you in a good way, not in a bad way. To find a hairstyle where you can avoid trashy, go with a celebrity-inspired style. One of my favorite go-to girls to find classy styles from is Jessica Alba; she has the prettiest low ballerina bun with a sweet twist like throwing in a braid. Nothing says sassy yet classy like a small (1-inch wide) braid, and let me tell you, this girl knows how to pull it off!

If you’re looking for even more ways to avoid trashy, I’d say to avoid leaving too much hair down. At my school, I saw lots of girls who liked to put only some of their hair up and leave giant strands down to hang in their face. This doesn’t let others see your beautiful face and makes you look self-conscious; be proud of your face and own your beauty! I would suggest maybe even using some hair shears and trimming the bangs off at an angle to give you a perfectly elegant look. When the bangs begin above the brow and go at a diagonal down to the ear, you create a swoopy look that is sure to highlight your best features!

The number one tip of keeping hairstyles classy for prom and winter formal season is to get it back! Get it up out of your face and prevent it from blocking your sparkling eyes and stunning cheekbones! Popular styles for school dances are french twists, curly messy buns, and poofy bouffants. There are plenty other ways to keep your style classy and not trashy. For example the way you wear your dress. Another story for another day; keep your look classy at your next school dance with these great tips for great hair.

Why Do We Cut Our Hair?

February 5, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Some say that getting haircuts makes them feel refreshed. The feeling of a new haircut can give your look a little zip and make everything seem crisp since it’s a new cut. There are also theories stating that if you trim your ends every six to eight weeks it can help your hair to grow faster. Some say this theory can’t be true, however, because it may seem hard to make hair grow if it’s always getting cut. There are many reasons why people cut their hair but there are also people out there who think haircuts are overrated. Why would you want to cut your hair when you can keep it growing to be luscious and long.

One of the reasons to cut hair regularly is because the ends get messy and tend to break easily if they aren’t treated. The suggested length to wait between cuts is six to eight weeks because the hair follicle needs a little time to grow back out before it can be reshaped. If you have extremely dry and damaged hair, you need may need to make your regular cut every four to six weeks so the hair can be repaired more often and maintain some health. As long as you bring out those hair shears more than twice a year, you can help your hair keep its body.

We, as Americans, are a much cleaner group of people than those in some foreign countries. Not to say there is anything wrong with other cultures and their traditions but in our specific society, we tend to care of our bodies more often and in heavier ways. For example, the average American will cleanse his or her hair and body once each day whereas it is more traditional in places like Rome to shower every three or four days. The fact that we are slightly higher on the hygiene scale reminds us that we tend to have cleaner cut hair too. Most Americans say that a good haircut should come every once in a while just to feel cleaner about themselves.

As odd as it may seem, some people even get a haircut just to gossip! That’s right, some ladies need a little time away from their husbands or children so they get a quick trim at the salon just to be around other women who talk about similar things! This may even be one of the more popular reasons for women to get a haircut. On the other hand, some men could care a less about their hair being cut and what type of shears are being used on them, etc. They get haircuts because their wives force them to after so long. The typical things they’ll hear from their wives include, “You look like a girl!” or “I can’t believe how long you’re letting your hair grow…I’m calling my hair lady!”

There are some reasons for getting a regular cut that make more sense than others. Who would think a place like a beauty salon would be a go-to place to get your mind off of things. For some women, it’s the perfect place. Then there are reasons like giving the hair cuticle a fresh start every once in a while. This is smart if you want to keep hair growing at its best. If you don’t get a regular trim with a quality pair of shears, the growth rate gets trapped by split ends and makes it come to an abrupt halt after so long.

5 Things You Should Know About Hair Scissors Before Purchasing

January 2, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Wouldn’t it be nice if styling our hair were as easy as waking up and walking out the door? So many people search and search for hairstyling tools that will make their hair routine easier. But when it comes down to it, is there really one product that will actually help you style your hair in so many small steps? Think about the pair of hair shears sitting in your medicine cabinet and the things they can do for you. You may think you know all about them and what they do to keep your hair routine short whenever you need a trim, but there are a few things that you should know about them.

Before using your shears regularly, you must familiarize yourself with everything the tools have to offer. One of the most important parts of a pair of hair scissors is the grip on them. Your comfort is so crucial when you are cutting hair because if your fingers aren’t comfortable in the holes of the shears, you cannot perform well as a haircutter. Your cuts won’t be precise, your shears can slip in the middle of a cut, and your fingers could also cramp up. All of these could cause your client to become unhappy with their hairstyle. To ensure that your grip is good enough with the shears, you can either break the shears in if they are just slightly uncomfortable, or you can test them out for a bit before making a final purchase. Just remember, as long as your fingers are happy, so will your clients be.

You should also familiarize yourself with the blades of your hair scissors. The sharpness of these compared to your scissors for your office is a big difference. Hair shears are designed to cut precisely through hair as smoothly as possible. The blades are not designed for paper, in fact cutting through paper with hair scissors could permanently damage the blades. Not only should you be careful about damaging the blades, you should also be aware of the sharpness for your own safety. One wrong snip could slice through your skin and cause infections down the road. Safety always comes first when it comes to the blades of hair scissors and is one of the most important things to take care of when cutting hair.

When purchasing a pair of hair shears, the cost is typically one of the make or break factors in deciding what to buy. It is important to weigh all options between each pair you see. Make sure you know things like warranty information, all features, and durability. If you are purchasing a pair of hair scissors, you must know all about them so you can be sure that the investment will be worth it. You should know exactly what you’re getting yourself into with every purchase you make, especially something as expensive as a pair of shears so be sure to ask plenty of questions.

The fourth thing you should know about hair scissors is what others think of them. Make use of your internet and look up reviews of scissors before you purchase them. When you know what others have experienced with the same tools, you can have a better grasp at what you could expect. If you buy something without knowing anything about it, how will you know if it will work for you or not? Reading reviews is one of the smartest things you can do before purchasing anything because of all the opinions and background information that is provided.

The final thing you need to get straight before investing in a new pair of hair scissors is your own feelings. You have to make sure that you know you will love the shears and the affect they have on you as a hairstylist. Also remember that it’s not like a shirt where once you get sick of wearing it, you can just throw it away. Hair shears have so much value to them and must be dealt with in such a careful way. They definitely aren’t cheap and need to be something that you know you can stick with forever.

After getting everything straight, you know you can purchase a great pair of shears. They must be the right kind for you that will perform great jobs as you continue your styling. Whether it’s your hair that you’re cutting or another client’s hair, it is very important that you know all of the things mentioned above so that you are getting your money’s worth in the purchase of hair scissors.

Do Regular Trims Really Encourage Growth?

September 14, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Is it really true that trimming your hair makes it grow faster? Is this a fact or is it just an old wives’ tale? Well, neither. Or both, depending on how you look at it. For some hair types, trimming up the ends each month can be very beneficial when it comes to growth. On the other hand, some hair types will not benefit at all from this regular snip snip every couple of months.

The average person experiences about ½ inch of hair growth per month. Moreover, people can lose more than 100 individual hair strands every month.  It’s important to determine which type of hair you have in order to decide whether you should be doing a regular trim.

If the ends of your hair tend to break off regularly or you experience damaged hair, you are part of the group that should spend some quality time with some hair scissors. Unhealthy hair will experience split ends on a regular basis. These ends will break off, causing your hair to seem as though it’s never growing. Ask your hair dresser to use high quality professional hair scissors to trim only the very ends of your hair and this should encourage healthy, happy growth. These are the people who view the “trimming will help your hair grow faster” idea as fact.

On the other hand, if you have healthy, strong hair, you may not be doing yourself any favors with the monthly trims. If you have few split ends and little breakage, trimming the hair will likely cause more harm than good in your hair growing efforts. These are the people who view the “trimming will help your hair grow faster” idea as a myth.

Decide with your hair dreser whether or not you fall into the category of “split ends” and whether or not you need regular trims. Talk to him or her about “micro-trimming” or “dusting” your ends. This is a process that can be done with an extremely sharp pair of hair scissors. The hair scissors MUST be extremely sharp for this process to work.

This trim removes less than ½ inch of hair with each snip. It is ideal for trimming split ends without losing length. No type of trimming will actually make hair follicles grow faster, but in some cases it can improve the appearance of hair and help extend the length by preventing breakage.

A Guide to Selecting Hair Shears

Kamisori Black Diamond Shear Set

Kamisori Black Diamond Shear Set

Spending day after day cutting and shaping and blending and thinning can put a lot of stress on your muscles, but the right hair scissors provide every comfort enhancing feature available.

Because you’re learning, you’ll try out your hair scissors on many styles of hair and use them for many different cuts.  This makes it vital for you to have quality hair scissors that will last.  Hair scissors are your equipment; they are your most important tool.

The Kamisori 5.75”Ergonomic Student Shears are made from 440C high chromium Stainless Steel.  It is made with special corrosion resistant properties to ensure that they don’t rust or become damaged and this metal provides the highest durability so these student hair scissors will last throughout all of your training.

It’s important to use the proper blade for each hair cut.  Convex and Bevel blades are the most used types.  Bevel blades have been around for a long time and are the oldest style used today.  Because of it’s older design, scissors with bevel blades need more forced to open and close.  It can easily add pain and strain to your hand and fingers.  Just consider how many times you open and close your shears during one hair cut.  The convex blade is a newer, updated blade and is used on nearly all training shears.  It is a state of the art, smooth blade that requires less force.  Convex blades are required for slide cutting because bevel blades will leave the hair choppy and gapped.

To make shears more easily adjustable, tension systems have evolved and grown to be the most efficient possible.  There are five tensions systems on professional hair shears:  The Coin Adjustable, Round Click Dial Adjustable, Leaf Spring Assembly, Rotating Thumb Ball Bearing and Ball Bearing Pivot System.  The purpose of a tension system is to allow the hair stylist to adjust how the shears open and close.  If the tension is too tight, the shears will cut the hair poorly and it will cause a lot of unnecessary damage to the hair shears.  If the tension is too loose, the blades will simply bend the hair rather than cutting it. The coin adjustable system is the oldest tensions system available; it is considered an industry standard and very dependable.

Round click dial tension systems are more precise because the scissors make an audible click with each adjustment. The leaf spring adjustable tensions system is modified version of the previous two styles that allows for much more control and accuracy when adjusting the tension.  The balance it offers to hair shears results in a longer lasting set of scissors.  Both of the ball bearing tensions styles allow for more stability and movement when using the hair scissors.

Finger rests are an option feature available on most hair scissors and provides a new level of comfort and/or stability.  It can reduce muscle stress and prevent injury, especially CTS (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome) and RSI (Repetive Strain Injury).  There is no hard-fast answer for using a finger rest.  Its use is based on the desire of the stylist. Because of this, some professional hair shears come with a finger rest and some don’t.  On some shears, the finger rest is removable, allowing each student to try cutting hair with and without the rest.  No matter what their preference, students will be able to work comfortable with these kinds of shears.

The final feature discussed in this article is the thumb ring, or swivel thumb ring. Many scissors are manufactured with stationary thumb rings, but for a new hair stylist, it is important to use scissors that can adjust to his or her preferences.  It’s also valuable in that it give a student the opportunity to try using the scissors at different angles to help decide what works best.  Many high quality shears have a thumb ring that adjusts to any angle to increase comfort and leverage and to provide options to each new stylist.

Professional hair shears come in a vast variety of shapes, sizes and designs.  They range from very inexpensive and very low quality to extremely expensive and the highest quality.  This tool is an smart investment, and hair scissors are not something that can be taken lightly.  The least expensive pair of professional hair shears is almost never the best option; with poor quality scissors your will deliver poor quality cuts and hinder your career.  It’s important to invest in the best tools not only for your career, but during your schooling as well.
