There is nothing more frustrating than to have the cord on your hair styling tools come disconnected from the unit. Cheap drugstore hair care tools tend to be poorly made and one of the first things to cause problems is where the cord connects to the actual curling iron or hair blow dryers. This cannot only make the tool operate ineffectively but it can be dangerous as well. Professional hair styling tools have more durable cords and insulated connections to ensure this does not happen. Since they are designed to be used be someone who works with hair all day long they are built to last under heavy use.
Hair straighteners work by breaking down the hair’s hydrogen bonds found in the hair’s cortex, which cause hair to bend and become curly. Once the bonds are broken, hair is prevented from holding its original, natural form, though the hydrogen bonds can re-form if exposed to moisture.

The hair straightener some say dates back to 1872 to a Parisian gentleman called Marcel Grateau. His early invention which were basically heat rods, were used with chemical lotions and then added to the hair to straighten it. When these methods were used there were many draw backs. People would find their hair becoming damaged and in most cases burnt. The first patented hair iron was in 1906 by Simon Monroe, he created a tool that had metal teeth and then would be combed through the hair. They seemed to work but nothing like what we have today.

The first “real” hair straightener design would have to be in 1909 by Issac Shero, he patented and invented the first heated hair care tools.

The first designs were hot metal plates that were used to slide through the hair, the products were a great improvement on the early day inventions and reduced risk on damaging the hair. He then advanced his designs and introduced ones which included the ceramic straightener and electrical straighteners. He was also the first person to have adjustable heat settings and different size hair straighteners. The most common hair straightener today would be the ceramic ones with the heating elements. It was proven by the early models that using straighteners can be damaging for the hair if not used properly or too much, this still applies today and the chances of getting split ends, or brittle and broken hair is increased. Unlike in the early days there has been advancement in many of the hairstyling tools to prevent this from happening. Products such as heat protection sprays and conditioning creams will reduce the amount of damage caused by excessive use.

Yes, there is such a thing as using heating products too much, that is if your not using anything to protect your hair before you start styling. Do you have a matted type ball at the back of your head and the middle doesn’t seem to be as long as the sides? This is because of too much heat products and other misc. things, ie: elastic bands too tight, not the right pillow case etc. If you are going to be using your hair straightener everyday you need to start protecting your hair in the process, if you don’t you will not be able to even straighten that matted hair on the back of your head, it will always have a certain frizz look to it.
Make sure that you take a break every once in a while where you don’t blow dry or use any kind of heating products. Try doing this once or twice a week. Use a good spray in conditioner, avoiding anything that has alcohol in it (this dries out your hair) spray each section as you are straightening it. Use a good conditioning pack at least once every two weeks (the kind you keep in and wash out after approx. 15 min.) Comb deep conditioner through hair and rinse out after time noted above.
Do not brush your hair too harshly, using a natural bristled brush, or a comb, just brush from the bottom up. Use a lower heat setting on your hair straightener once in awhile. As you can see from the photos below after time heating products and just not caring about your hair does sufficient damage. So to ensure the best healthiest hair take care of yourself, eat right, do conditioning treatments and treat your hair like it’s your best friend.

Buying the right shampoo is easy. It’s when you take it home and find that what you thought it would do it doesn’t that makes it frustrating! Ph balance again is important but no shampoo is going to “fix” your hair. Read the label before you buy, is it for your hair type? When you do use shampoo use the amount that is right for your length. If you have really long hair I suggest using twice as much than you would for shoulder length hair (about a toonie for shoulder length).
When shampooing always massage into your scalp with your fingers, not nails and let the shampoo run through the rest of your hair while you are rinsing. This will prevent your hair from becoming to dry. Do not shampoo your hair everyday, your hair has natural occurring oils that are good it. I realize hair that is thin and fine needs to be washed more often, but this is the worst thing for this kind of hair. If you can, on the second day try to put your hair up instead of washing it. If you do not use too many styling products on day one of shampooing, your hair will not look as oily on day two. Try to stay away from products that are a shampoo and conditioner in one. Do you notice that some people can go days without washing their hair and it still looks healthy and shiny? Well I know it is a little depressing for those who cannot, but after you shampoo every second day instead of everyday your hair will start to be “okay” with this. The first little while your hair may still look a little oily at the roots but this starts to diminish. Also to avoid excess damage make sure you use your styling tools, ie: hair straightener, curling irons and blow dryers at the correct setting for your hair. Too hot, more damage on thinner, finer hair types.

Some of the tips I will give you will be from my own personal experience, being that of fine thin hair, the rest is research. I have done so many different things with conditioner, using it, going without it, keeping it in and so on. Here are some recommendations for fine thin hair. Conditioning is not always wise. Never deep condition your hair on a night where you might have to go out. Your hair will be limp, have no body and you certainly will not be able to “manage” it! Do this maybe once every 2 weeks. Use the deep conditioner you have chosen after you get out of the shower. You want to leave this in for awhile. Towel dry your hair, put about a toonie size amount in the palm of your hand, rub all over and then comb through.
Put some sort of plastic bag around your head and blow dry on hot for about 5 to 10 minutes.
This may be hard to do on your own if you don’t like holding your arms up or are impatient! Rinse out and don’t bother styling it, it will have no life until tomorrow. When you are using a rinse out conditioner, use only a bit, put it on the ends of your hair, finger comb it through, then whatever is left over quickly run through your hair and rinse out right away.
Some people I know with thin fine hair don’t even bother with conditioner because of how limp they find their hair afterwards. The key to finding a good conditioner for this type of hair is: make sure it is a light weight one and use something that has “For Fine Limp Hair” in the title. If you go to the stylist regularly for perms ask her to spray in a light stay in conditioner before wrapping each curl, protects our hair type a little better.
Try not to use store bought products for reasons I am sure I have mentioned many times. Try to stay in your ph balance which is approx 5.5. Some products will tell you the ph balance, others will not. The ones that don’t make me nervous and I chose to stay away from them! Never use hair straighteners on the highest temperature, this will dry your hair out. Always remember to set at the medium setting, and keep conditioning your hair in the ways I have mentioned.

For thicker hair rinse out conditioners can be combed through the hair while in the shower, this helps in removing tangles for the “later” brushing. Deep conditioners can be used once a week if you are a person who always tends to blow dry and style, especially with curling irons or a flat iron. If you are only a blow dryer or styler once in a while then deep conditioning packs can be used on a more bi-weekly basis. Stay in conditioners are good to use for adding that extra healthy look to your hair after it has been dried and styled as well, for both thin or thick hair. Just use different amounts, less for thin hair, more for thick hair.
Personally, my hair has never grown! No, I ‘m serious, after I got gum stuck in it when I was 8 and mom had to put the ol’ bowl around my head and cut it like no other little boy I ever saw, it just never grew back. Well, I guess it did somewhat. I will see friends then not see them for a year and they will say ” Hey you always get your hair cut the same length,” uh, NO, it just doesn’t grow! I have tried all sorts of things, never did try that one, you know, the ad with the girl in black and white with really long hair. The ad promises you can grow your hair within 7 days. If I can’t grow my hair within a year then I doubt there is a magic formula that’s gonna do it in 7 days! I hope I wasn’t wrong.
Some girls, like Giselle here, have naturally wavy, thick, beautiful hair. Not only would I love to have her hair but I think I could deal with a bit of her looks too! I found a couple sites that “say” they will help grow your hair, make it thicker and so on. If anyone tries these products I would love it if you could let me know if they actually work. Here’s one grow-long-hair-fast.com and another fasterhairgrowth.com. There products are different from one another but say they will do the same thing.
The best product that actually worked for me were vitamins. Vegetal Silica, Horsetail Root. These vitamins proved to actually make a noticeable difference in the growth of my hair. Oh, plus one other thing, pregnancy!!! Wow did my hair ever grow then, like weeds.

It’s important to take care of your Professional Hair Straightener if you want it to last longer and continue to work at its best. - Avoid sleeping in hair accessories.
- Avoid styling products which contain alcohol (found in many hair gels) to avoid drying hair out.
- Use hair elastics that are designed not to pull and snag hair and avoid wearing them too tightly.
- Be kind to your hair! Give it a break from styling, coloring, perming and let it rest every now and then.
