Dyeing Dangers

June 27, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

I recently wrote a blog about Katy Perry’s hairstyles that make her who she is. Katy Perry is so famous in todays industry because of her brave attitude to come out each day as who she is and be herself. I briefly talked about the styles that Katy sports because she inspires many girls to stay true to who they are and express themselves. Although she does a great job at expressing her own attitude and personality, there are a few precautions she should take when she styles her hair. I’d like to take a moment to talk specifically about the colors that appear in her hair. Hair dye can actually be quite a danger to your hair if you’re not careful.

When girls want to look just like their favorite celebrities, the measures they go to can be surprising. Today, there are girls out there who will dye their hair blue just to be like a certain superstar in the magazines. If they’re not careful with their dyeing techniques, a huge toll could be taken on their hair.

The reason stars like Katy Perry have a new hair color each time you see them on TV is because they can afford expensive wigs that look like real hair. Whether those wigs are blue, black, yellow, or pink, they look so real and when fans see them they want to look just like that. However, we can’t really afford the thousand-dollar wigs that celebrities can so we go for the next best thing: hair dye.

It looks so cool to walk around with blue streaks in your hair or to just have pure pink hair but have you ever wondered how much damage it could cause? Well the truth is, if you aren’t careful when you dye your hair, you could damage your hair worse than you would if you straightened it every day for the rest of your life. It’s kind of a wakeup call when you find out that hair dye can be more dangerous than a hair straightener, isn’t it?

The reason it’s more harmful is because of the process it takes to properly dye your hair. If you do it by yourself, you could seriously damage your hair because you don’t know what you’re doing. The color will probably not show up the way you want it if you don’t have a hairdresser help you. The funny thing about dyeing your hair is that most of the time you have to bleach the area that you plan on dyeing. For brunettes especially this is hard because it’s a long process to bleach your head of hair to be white and then go to a completely different color like pink or blue. It’s difficult not to damage your hair by completely bleaching it.

After so many times of repeating this process, your hair could be dry to the bone and frizzy with no shine or volume. That’s why it’s so important to dye hair the right way or just not do it at all. Realize that some trends are cute for movie stars or singers but you can still express yourself in the way you dress or act. Be smart with your hairdressing decisions.

Celebrity Hair Review: Katy Perry

June 8, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

One of my favorite artists is Katy Perry. She is ever-growing and lets nothing slow her down; it makes everyone love her even more. Another part of her that everyone loves is her spunky and edgy sense of style. When she first came out with her hit single “I Kissed A Girl” we were all in shock that someone would write a song about that but then as she became more famous and got even more comfortable in Hollywood, she started changing a few other things about her. For example, she started dressing in things like bras that shoot out whipped cream and started dying her hair different shades of pink and purple-even if they were wigs, we all learned to love her a little bit more.

Let’s face it, it’s so hard to get recognized in Hollywood today and Katy had her own way of doing so. Some of her songs have been considered borderline crazy-she falls in love with an alien in one song, she sings about kissing another girl and even has a song about sexual terms but that’s what kept her in touch with record companies-it kept them guessing. As fans, we’re also always guessing and wondering what she will do next with her fun yet kooky style.

Recently, Katy Perry filmed a movie about herself called Katy Perry: Part of Me. Although it’s not in theatres yet, in the previews you see many different hairstyles and colors that she sports and it may make you wonder a few things. How does she have such pretty hair after so many different styles and transformations? It’s so true, her hair is absolutely perfect and it never looks like there’s a strand out of place. Now of course she has a stylist that can make her hair look like brand new each day and she probably wears wigs half the time but sometimes it is her real hair that is colored blue or hot pink. And how does she keep such healthy hair?

That’s just it, she has a stylist. There are some people that aren’t celebrities dye who their hair almost once a week and their hair will never look as good as Katy Perry’s. She inspires many people today because of her fun hair but the difference between our hair and her hair is that she pays someone thousands of dollars a year to make it look stunning and completely non-damaged. Whereas we can barely afford a cut and color every month or so. I would be willing to be that if Katy Perry showed her true hair, without extensions, without any hair dye in it, she would have very damaged and dull hair because of all the things she puts it through.

Katy Perry is one of the greatest artists of our time and we all envy her for her stunning performances and appearance. Although I do love her hair, the damage she’s done between dying and styling, I don’t envy her for. The use of a straightener is evident in her hair each time you see her and although it’s not necessarily a bad thing, it can be bad after so long. Katy better watch how she styles her hair-it could come back to haunt her.

Keeping Hair Fresh Makes Your Look Fresh

When I was younger, I could go two or three months between each haircut. It always seemed easier when I was a young girl because my hair hadn’t been exposed to heat or damaging chemicals yet. Getting a haircut in April meant my next appointment would be in June or July. However, as I grew up, I started getting into trends from my favorite TV shows and wanted to constantly look like my favorite celebrities. When I was little, fresh haircuts made me look older because of the styles I was admired by. Now that I’m older I realize haircuts should make me look younger. As I get older I don’t want to look older, I want to keep my youthful, fun look that keeps me in touch with my youthful personality.

Older women today sometimes have trouble with this concept of staying younger. There are a few common mistakes that they make, thinking these things will make them look older. For example, they tan their skin, grow their hair out, get their nails done and more just to make themselves look younger. Truth is, those things only make them look older. When they tan their skin becomes wrinkly and tight when what they want is to look dark and flawless. Maybe this is what they see but the rest of the world notices an orange shriveled up body. Growing hair out doesn’t look great on older women because of the texture of their hair. As we age, our hair gets drier and begins to loose its natural oils and the longer it gets, the more noticeable those dried ends become. Getting nails done aren’t that bad of an asset to the aging process. It just looks bad when you combine it with the above trends that don’t look good.

Going back to growing out hair, we want to avoid looking old with our hair especially. To do this, we should think of new ways to keep a fresh look and a perfect example would be a haircut! Getting regular haircuts is an essential if you want to look young and fresh. Doing this can also bring out highlights in your other features too. For example, when you get bring out those  hair shears and chop off all dead ends in your hair, you can add a little needed volume. Create some layers too if you want a little oomph in the top of your head. Body in the hair definitely cuts a few years off your look and when you build up the hair, you also build up your cheekbones. Shorter cuts are very appropriate for women over fifty and when you use your hair scissors for certain tasks it helps a lot. Another idea is to cut a section from your bangs to swoop to the side. This will cover some of the aging spots on the forehead but it will also draw attention to your eyes when the hair falls right next the eye.

To play up your look, think about ways to make yourself younger. Next time you want a new style, don’t think about dying your roots or going tanning to make yourself look younger. Instead try getting it all cut off and making it more of a polished look. Making yourself look younger definitely isn’t a hard thing to do when you think about it.

How Celebrities Do It

March 11, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Have you ever been to a concert or seen a performance on an awards show and noticed how absolutely perfect the performer looks? Her makeup doesn’t seem to run no matter how much she sweats, her hair seems to remain free from frizz and doesn’t get wet from all the sweat. How do they do it? Looking perfect seems so hard for normal people to pull off and if you think about it, celebrities surely couldn’t do it without the help of their stylists.

Seeing a girl on a blazing hot stage with dozens of lights on her with flawless makeup makes you wonder why you can’t keep your makeup flawless during a low-stress day at school. The truth behind the scenes is actually…behind the scenes! Stars could never look as great as they do if they didn’t have touch up’s every time they exited stage during breaks. The job of a stylist is to update the performer’s look at every possible second.

For example, Fergie could sprint off stage with straight hair just to “change her outfit,” but when she gets back she has a whole different wardrobe, a new smoky-eyed makeup, and curly hair. This all happens in a matter of about sixty seconds and many people are amazed at how this can be pulled off. A stylist has tons and tons of practice and knows just how the business works: fast-pace and frantic. No matter how hard they may work it out on stage, celebs can always count on their trusty hair straighteners to get through frizz and messed up ends for each moment of the show.

You know those things called dress rehearsals? Yep, that’s how the stylist prepares him or herself and gets ready for the big show. They time everything from curling pieces of hair to getting the ride shade of eyeshadow applied. Of course they have their little secret tools that they love/have to use but it’s all about time and the pace that everyone moves at. The flawlessness is almost impossible to achieve, mostly because no one has the same type of hair as another person. Therefore, there isn’t one trick that is going to help each and every person’s hair; it takes a variety of ways depending on the type of hair you have.

Why Won’t My Hair Stay Straight?

January 21, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Ever had that moment where your hair looks great and perfectly straight? You can tell this will be a great day but once you step outside and it gains back its frizz and curly texture. Your day can ruined with one step into the heat and humidity of outdoors. Now you must go back in and re straighten it. But wait, you’re already late for work and have no time to perfect the frizz of a mess that has been created!

If this does happen repeatedly to you, it may be time to rethink your straightening process. You may be asking your stylist why your hair isn’t staying straight as the day goes on. She may say the cause of this is because it is being exposed to an excessive amount of moisture after you style. What you can do to help prevent the return of the messy hair is use a new method of styling.

Try applying your thermal spray first and then wait a few minutes before you straighten. This time slot is to allow time for you to apply a mousse to your hair that will help lock in the necessary amount of moisture and seal out all moisture you won’t need the rest of the day. This is a great way that celebrities prevent disasters on the red carpet and now so can you!

Begin by scooping some mud or mousse out of the container and spreading it evenly throughout the ends of the hair. One thing you need to be careful is the amount of product you apply to the hair. Since it is such a thick material that you are putting in your hair, it can give your hair a greasy look if you’re not careful. You’re looking for a shiny texture and look, not slippery and greasy. The perfect amount to use is about the size of a pea and if it doesn’t look too greasy, you can add small amounts no bigger than a dime.

Locking in moisture doesn’t have to be hard when you straighten your hair. You can complete the task in a matter of twenty minutes and still look like a million bucks. Amounts of humidity exposure and mousse to retain shine and straight locks are the main things to be concerned with. As long as you keep those two things in mind your hair should look great everyday.

Hair Extensions Are For Everyone

January 2, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Have you always wanted long, beautiful hair? It’s true that people usually want what they don’t have, and if you have short hair, you may often crave long luscious locks. Waiting for your hair to grow out is not a very good option. It will take years for your hair to grow out, and by the time your hair reaches the length that you want, you may have changed your mind and no longer want long hair. And more often than not, the hair will become damaged and unhealthy while you’re waiting for it to grow.

But there is an easier way. You can always opt for hair extensions as an easy alternative to create your beautiful look. Some women mistakenly think that hair extensions are only for the rich and famous or celebrities and that normal people shouldn’t or can’t have them. This is the totally wrong way to think. There is absolutely no reason that you shouldn’t have hair extensions if you want them.

Price is no longer the barrier that it used to be as hair extensions are much more affordable now than they used to be and there are many different options for all budgets. If you want to save even more money, you can have a friend put your extensions in for you instead of opting for an expensive salon. There are many different types of hair extensions that are simple enough for anyone to put in on their own.

One of the common misconceptions about hair extensions is that they look fake and everybody will know that you are wearing them. Well of course your close friends will know that you have hair extensions because overnight you will have much longer hair. But for others, no one will be any the wiser about your extensions because they are made very well now and do not look fake at all. There are a wide variety of colors to choose from, you will be able to match your hair type very closely for an excellent match. Choosing extensions made with human hair will also help to have them looking very natural and will make it easier for you to care for them as well and style them.

Hair extensions can be treated like your normal hair. You can wash them, and style them normally with your hair straightener, curling iron and hair dryer without fear of damaging your look. It is recommended that you take a bit more care in washing your hair, and use a gentle shampoo, avoiding the connections where they attach to your own hair, but other than that, you should be able to treat your hair as you normally would.

Don’t think that you have to wear your hair extremely long just because you have extensions. Many women are under the impression that they will have hair down to their rear end if tey get extensions and that’s not always true. If that’s the length that you want, than you can go right ahead, but otherwise you can cut your hair and have your stylist shape it however you would like.

Hair extensions are not just for the rich and famous anymore. With a wide variety available, anyone can have that long, gorgeous movie star look.

Bobs with Texture

August 18, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

It looks like this fall celebrities in Hollywood are getting bob haircuts that touch the nape of their neck and then are applying great texture to them. These slightly longer bobs are perfect for adding soft waves in with a hair curling irons. Hold your curling iron vertically and wrap small sections around them to curl for about five seconds. Once you get the curl in shake your head out and your long bob will have great texture and style just like you have a expensive hair dresser to give you the hottest looks.

How to Wear Hair Up

May 23, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Sometimes wearing our hair up is all we can do to fix a “bad hair day”. I am often told I look better with my hair up, I tend to disagree, I love having my hair down…on a good hair day of course. Here are some trendy up styles that some of the celebrities are wearing.

Here is a loose outside french braid that is wrapped around from front to back.

Wearing your hair down, especially if it’s past your shoulders, will make your face look longer while sweeping it off your face is instantly uplifting,” notes Paula Casano, co-owner of New York City’s Insitu Salon.

A well styled up do has professional written all over it. Although we can have more problems with our hair up than when down, a low pony tail or well polished “fold” should do the trick.

Absolutely more professional with hair up while the hair down is more suited for a casual outing.

If you haven’t had time to get a trim and frizzy ends are making your locks fall lank, tie them up, says Barry Reitman, a celebrity stylist at Juan Juan in Beverly Hills.

Straightening your hair with a hair iron is great for a sleek easy up hair do as well, it leaves the hair that you leave outside of the elastic in a straight sort of “messy look”

Tie your hair band to either side of the back of your head and flip over your shoulder. Use a hair straightener to flip ends up.

Till next time Good Luck,
