What is Tourmaline & How Can it Help Your Hair

September 21, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Tourmaline is a semi-precious stone, which comes in many different colors so it is sometimes called the rainbow gemstone. Scientists have discovered that when this gemstone is used in hair tools such as tourmaline ceramic hair straighteners it will emit negative ions and far infrared rays, which will help your hair, looks its best. The infrared rays will lock in moisture to hair and eliminate frizz while the negative ions will make the straightening process quicker and leave your hair looking much healthier and shinier than if you used a non-tourmaline hair iron. These are the hair straighteners of choice for professional stylists who demand the best possible performance from their hair tools.

Causes & Prevention of Dry Hair

September 18, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

At one point and time just about everyone gets very dry hair and though it happens to just about everyone it can also be prevented. Common caused for very dry hair include heat damage, stripped hair, and way too many chemicals. To prevent some of these issues from causing so much damage to your hair that your hairstyles do not turn out looking their best then give your hair a few breaks for a while. Let your hair have a chance to regain its health by forgoing chemicals such as dyes and perms. Also many women wash their hair way more than it really needs done. Cut back on the shampooing and whenever possible only use professional hair tools to style your hair.

Differences Between Scissors & Shears

September 16, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Many people feel that the terms scissors and shears are actually interchangeable terms but really there is a few slight differences between the two so they are not exactly the same type of cutting implement. Scissors are usually less than six inches in length, have two small matching handles, and are usually used for lighter cutting jobs due to their smaller sizes. While shears are usually larger than six inches and have non-matching handles with the exception of hairdressing shears, which have identical handles. Whether you are shopping for scissors or shears for trimming hair it is essential that you have a pair that feels good in your hand.

Negative Ions & Your Hair

August 15, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Science has proven that negative ions infused into hair will help it retain its own natural moisture, and this will result in healthier hair. Women do so much to their hair with excess washing, styling, and dyeing to continually try and look their best. It is so nice to know that by investing just a little bit in a ionic hair dryer the negative ions from the dryer can help your hair stay healthy despite the constant styling. These blow dryers will not dry out your hair and not only will it be healthier and more luxuriant; it will also be less susceptible to damaging split ends.

Aging Hair

July 6, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Not like we don’t have to worry enough already about our aging skin, we now have anti-aging shampoos and conditioners? Seems lately I find myself writing a lot about aging and your skin and hair, but these are the two most worrisome factors when aging. I asked women what they wanted to know about most and this is what they said,”Tell me how to get my hair and skin back!”

Well, heaven knows I would love to, believe me. I am not taking to kindly to the thought of turning…well, the age that I will be turning soon! And yes, if I had an abundance of money you can bet your last dollar I would spend some, lots, okay, a substantial amount on some “younger” looking methods, ie: face lift? maybe a little nip & tuck, just pull everything up. Don’t get me wrong, I am most of the time happy with my appearance but my mother was right, time goes by way too fast.

With all the styling we do, hair straightening, chemical treatments, and such just to look beautiful all day it’s no wonder we have time to eat and sleep. Did you know that after 30 most women’s hair will start to thin out? I almost cried when I heard this, I mean I only have a few strands left, am I going to be nearing the age of 80 taking the local bus down to my hairstylist only to find out she doesn’t have my color in hair extensions? Trust me this is a scary thought for our fine & thin haired people out there.

Well, as already discussed in the last blog post, vitamins and all the other suggestions made for hair and skin are essential to the health of our hair. But, did you know that you can now purchase Age Defying shampoo and Younger Looking conditioner? This is a tremendous break through!

Dr. Reed, a New York City Dermatologist says “Chemically treat your hair as infrequently as possible, and avoid anything that pulls on hair, such as tight rollers, ponytails, weaves, and braids. “Not only can they cause breakage, but they can destroy your roots permanently, rendering them unable to produce hair,”

Hair Extensions are a great way to add volume and length. clip-in hair extensions are a good way to add it when you want and avoid the above mentioned damage. Hair weaving is different than hair extensions, hair extensions are done in a much less hurtful, damaging way. (depending on the stylist and method she uses!)

Take 5,000 micrograms of biotin (a B vitamin) daily and use protein-laced styling products. As your hair thins, it gets weaker and less able to support its own weight, leading to breakage and loss. Protein fortifies the hair shaft. It can actually stick itself into hair and pull splitting sections together. Isn’t that amazing? Your split ends can be brought back together by protein!

For use in our forever aging hair I suggest using Nexxus Y Serum Younger Looking Hair shampoo and conditioner or Nature’s Gate Stayin’ Alive Anti-aging shampoo and conditioner.

Y Serum younger looking hair system transforms aged, abused hair into youthful, radiant, and healthy hair… reversing the multiple signs of aging in just days. This revolutionary, 3-step program delivers abundant doses of youth-enhancing ingredients at each stage of the daily hair care regimen.

Y Serum Shampoo gets rid of impurities without disturbing hair’s delicate structure. This mild and nurturing formulation bathes hair in rare and anti-aging ingredients.

Y Serum Conditioner formulation reverses the signs of aging hair, transforming mature, coarse, dull, and brittle hair into youthful, radiant, silky soft, and healthier hair. You are looking to spend about      $60.00 for the package of 3 or get it cheaper online.

Natures Gate- Stayin’ Alive Anti-Aging Shampoo Gently cleanses hair while helping protect against environmental damage, the effects of UV radiation and the stress of daily blow drying and styling.
Hair looks and feels revived and young! Retail $ 14.99, but I found it for just over $ 10.00 on line. Price is same for conditioner.

Natures Gate-Conditioner: Help hair look younger, feel softer and rejuvenated! This conditioner gives hair a new lease on life, without weighing it down. Infused with certified organic botanicals and a proprietary blend of proteins, its never too early to start an anti-aging program for your tresses.

I am going to try the Nexxus line and am quite excited about starting the Vegetal Silica/Nexxus hair plan. I hope you will join me and in three months from now I’d like to hear all comments, see photos and have a final blog on the use of the Nexxus product or the Nature’s Gate along with the Vegetal Silica/Horsetail plan.  We can see and share final results if enough of us do this together. Till next time, Good Luck,

Curling & Straightening with a Flat Iron

June 5, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

If you like to go back and forth between straight hair and wavy or curly hair you may be surprised to know that the only professional hair styling tool you need is a hair straightening iron. Most women think you have to have a curling iron and a flat iron if you want to achieve these looks, but with a professional flat iron and little practice you can achieve any of them very easily with just the flat iron.

The main difference in these looks is how you glide the hair iron through your hair. With all of the styles you start at the root of your hair and glide the ceramic hair iron slowly to the tip. Of course for straight hair you smoothly and slowly glide straight down the strands of hair. But for curly or wavy hair instead of gliding smoothly down the length of the hair you use a twist. This twisting motion will add a little bit of body to the curl, and the more you turn your wrist the more the curl will be pronounced in your hairs appearance.

Of course this sounds easy, and really it is. But as with most things you may not get it on the first try. Just keep practicing with your hair staightening iron and soon your friends will think you are spending a fortune at the salon.

Professional Hairstyling Tips

Here are some tips for various kinds of hair types:

For thin hair always use a volumizer, you should choose products that will specify that it wont weigh your hair down. Wait until your hair is almost dry and blow dry upside down. Do not use your hands to shake your hair while drying, this tends to make hair look frizzy once your done.

Pull your roots out with your fingers or a brush, firmly, hold the blow dryer to the roots for a few seconds, then take the blowdryer away and still holding onto your roots (almost pulling) let your hair cool down before letting go. Do this all over, tugging at your roots and holding hairdryer to them. This will give you volume from the root.

Try coloring your hair, this will give volume, manageability and body to fine thin hair. There are a ton of different colors to choose from and you could always just go with highlights or streaking. (your hair!)

For reviving a perm in between perms try using a curl enhancer.

red-hair.jpg

This look can be achieved by using Aveda curl enhancer, a hair diffuser, ( which is used to blow dry curls that will not seperate them while drying) drying upside down and scrunching.

For thick frizzy, wiry type hair I would suggest using a defrizzer or shiner, a straight iron will also help to flatten, smooth and gives greater control. Bumble & Bumble is just one of many different brands for helping tame frizz.

Although I do not normally suggest buying products from a store I recommend only one if you do and that is Sunsilk. I have said it before and I will say it again, “I have had nothing but good come out of using their products.” They have a whole product line for this type of hair, shampoo, conditioner and defrizzers.

Most products from the store are watered down and contain wax. Next time you shampoo your hair put a little baking soda in with it and wash normally. You will feel a huge difference in your hair because you just stripped all of the store bought products out of your hair. But DO NOT USE if you have to go out, you will have what looks like dandruff but is in fact flakes of all the stuff that we call wax coming out of your hair. Do the baking soda method a few times until you do not see any flakes. Unbelievable isn’t it?

Salon products are concentrated and are PH balanced for your hair. A normal ph balance is around 5.5.

To keep your hair in the style that you like, you must see your hairdresser regularly. A good haircut must be maintained and I suggest not waiting any longer than 6 weeks between visits. Until next time…Good luck!
