Hairstyle Changes Over The Years

April 26, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Remember when the cool hairstyles were to put your hair up in a bouffant style? Or like in the movie “Hairspray” all of the actors wear their hair in sort of a beehive look. Poofy hair and lots of body was all the rage back in the day. Now times have definitely changed and clothes aren’t the only thing that have been updated. Hair today still has lots of body and poof but has a much more modern look (partly thanks to our reality star friend, Snooki). We all know that hair doesn’t look the same as it used to but over the years, hairstyles have become different in stages.

Take, for example, the decade of the seventies. All of the styles from back then were filled with curls and volume. One of America’s favorite hairstyles of the seventies was Farrah Fawcett. Her hair was one of the most wanted styles of that time because of her luscious curls and gorgeous volume. Most women wanted their hair to be just like Farrah’s because of the beauty it gave off. Walking into a room with bouncy, blonde curls was very attractive and still is today. Color wasn’t as big back in the seventies as it is now, though. Compared to the seventies, lots of women’s hair in our time is very dead and dull because of over coloring or styling with straighteners too often.

Moving onto the eighties, hair transitioned into being much more edgy and “out there.” Madonna is the perfect example of this style of hair. Throughout the beginning of her career, she experienced many different styles that seem to haunt us all today. The term “business in the front, party in the back” definitely developed in this era. Madonna was one to sport the look of a spiked and short style near the crown, lengthening into a longer, layered style down the back. This is also when coloring hair became a bit more popular. Lots of males and females in this decade began experimenting with dye by coloring the ends or some strands of their hair in purple, blue, or pink. Compared to today, some kids still do this but not many grown women and men do it too often.

In the nineties, hair entered a time of messy and short. It was still a little edgy from the eighties but this time it was a small bit cleaner. Jennifer Anniston models the perfect “bob” style from the time that she was in Friends. Her hair was gorgeous because she created lots of layers and made a statement by tying in some highlights. She really inspired young and old women to play around with highlights and lowlights to get a softer or edgier look with their hair. The layers are still popular in today’s hairstyles and lots of women love to play with them to get more volume in their hair.

Although there have been many “eras of hair” so to speak, Americans have somewhat maintained certain elements of hairstyles over the years. If you noticed, there was a pattern of creating volume with each of the eras. Whether it be layers, curls, or color, women have always kept a common goal of having full and bouncy hair throughout the decades. Not many began using things like straighteners or coloring tools until the mid-90′s or so, but when they were discovered, it lead to today’s era. We have a pattern of “making statements” in today’s hairstyling times. We want to have fun hair that everyone will love and envy us for so we do whatever it takes to get all eyes on us. We may even turn back time and reflect on our previous eras to get that perfect style!

Men Can Straighten Their Hair Too!

Growing up my older brother had really curly hair, which he used to spend what seemed like hours in front of the mirror trying to tame. His only hairstyle choices were extremely short so the curl would be cut out of his hair or something that involved curl. He just like many men born with curly hair would have done anything to get straight hair since to many of these guys curls are a girly thing they do not like on their own heads.

Of course many men do not think of it but they too can use a flat iron on their hair to get rid of their naturally curly hair and get those straight hairstyles they see on the men in Hollywood that the ladies love. Some guys might be reluctant to try this depending on their personality since to many this kind of grooming is just too feminine. But many of the companies that make hair irons try and actually cater to guys by creating models that they would not mind using as much. The popular pink hair irons that are all the rage with the women just would not work in a guy’s bathroom so you can get things such as a camo design from Chi flat irons that a guy would not mind using at all.

Since many men have short hair it is important that they use a flat iron that has a small plate size so that it is easier to run the hair through the iron to get the hair straight. And just like with women it is essential that men use a quality professional straightener that will not damage their hair and leave it dried out and unhealthy. After all the whole point is to look good for the ladies and you want them to still be able to run their fingers through your hair.

Why Japanese Scissors Are Better

If you are searching for a quality pair of professional scissors for your salon or just your personal use than surely you have heard of the Japanese hair scissors which are all the rage in the business right now. These high quality hair scissors are not only made with the absolute best materials so the blades come to a sharp edge for a perfect cut each and every time. Japanese scissors and shears also utilize convex blades, which require less effort and strain on the hand in order to cut the hair. This is perfect for those who spend lots of time cutting hair each day and do not want the strain that occurs to the wrist when a repetitive action happens.

Styling That Short Hair

It seems like all the great hairstyles are always for long gorgeous hair, so what is a girl to do if she has short hair to work with. Some resort to hair extensions to get those long tresses that are all the rage, while others know they can be beautiful even with short hair they just need to add some style to the look. A good hair dresser can help you find just the right look for your short hair whether it is smooth straight hair from using a professional hair straightener or adorable curls achieved with a curling iron. There is a sure fire look that will knock everyone over with your fabulous short hair.
