First Time Scissor Shopping

February 12, 2012 by

Hair scissors aren’t the easiest things to know how to shop for. It takes a lot of time and effort to pick out the right pair for you and to know that you will love them. The process of shopping for hair scissors isn’t like a wedding dress in that you can’t just put something on and fall in love. With shears you have to test them for a minute and make sure they’re comfortably usable. The drama that comes with scissors shopping doesn’t always have to be difficult, though.

Starting out as a new stylist is when this process is the hardest. This is because without many years of experience, you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. When you are a beginner, the process is about five times harder and takes about five times longer. It does get easier though so take a breath!

The first thing to remember is to never shop alone; especially with something so expensive like hair scissors. Salesmen and women have a tendency to sell you shears because of their price, not their quality. If you hear so many good things about a pair of shears that are over 1000 dollars but you hear nothing about a cheaper pair that seems to have half-way decent quality to them, there may be a problem. The salesman knows he is getting your attention focused on the expensive shears and he is going to go on about them until you give in. This is why you should always bring a friend; preferably a friend that knows a thing or two about styling. She could help you discover some ways to choose the best shears. And hey, it never hurt to have someone there to help you say no to a salesperson!

Things never seem to go fast when shopping for shears but to speed up the process, think about the things you are looking for when you cut hair. And not just things like the color of the shears or a price range; consider things like the sharpness of the blades and the performance that a specific pair are known to give. It may even help to think about it as finding all of the positive things about a certain pair you may find and then after finding that pair, ask about the price. It’s not always a great idea to judge a pair by its price.

Shopping never seems to be hard for women because it’s more of a hobby than a chore. Face it, we’ll use any excuse to be able to go out and shop for an afternoon! However, when it comes to shopping for useful tools like hair scissors, the process of shopping actually does become difficult and takes some time and consideration. Always remember the two main things about being a first time shear buyer: never shop alone and always get well-familiarized with each pair you may like.
