Dyeing Dangers

June 27, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

I recently wrote a blog about Katy Perry’s hairstyles that make her who she is. Katy Perry is so famous in todays industry because of her brave attitude to come out each day as who she is and be herself. I briefly talked about the styles that Katy sports because she inspires many girls to stay true to who they are and express themselves. Although she does a great job at expressing her own attitude and personality, there are a few precautions she should take when she styles her hair. I’d like to take a moment to talk specifically about the colors that appear in her hair. Hair dye can actually be quite a danger to your hair if you’re not careful.

When girls want to look just like their favorite celebrities, the measures they go to can be surprising. Today, there are girls out there who will dye their hair blue just to be like a certain superstar in the magazines. If they’re not careful with their dyeing techniques, a huge toll could be taken on their hair.

The reason stars like Katy Perry have a new hair color each time you see them on TV is because they can afford expensive wigs that look like real hair. Whether those wigs are blue, black, yellow, or pink, they look so real and when fans see them they want to look just like that. However, we can’t really afford the thousand-dollar wigs that celebrities can so we go for the next best thing: hair dye.

It looks so cool to walk around with blue streaks in your hair or to just have pure pink hair but have you ever wondered how much damage it could cause? Well the truth is, if you aren’t careful when you dye your hair, you could damage your hair worse than you would if you straightened it every day for the rest of your life. It’s kind of a wakeup call when you find out that hair dye can be more dangerous than a hair straightener, isn’t it?

The reason it’s more harmful is because of the process it takes to properly dye your hair. If you do it by yourself, you could seriously damage your hair because you don’t know what you’re doing. The color will probably not show up the way you want it if you don’t have a hairdresser help you. The funny thing about dyeing your hair is that most of the time you have to bleach the area that you plan on dyeing. For brunettes especially this is hard because it’s a long process to bleach your head of hair to be white and then go to a completely different color like pink or blue. It’s difficult not to damage your hair by completely bleaching it.

After so many times of repeating this process, your hair could be dry to the bone and frizzy with no shine or volume. That’s why it’s so important to dye hair the right way or just not do it at all. Realize that some trends are cute for movie stars or singers but you can still express yourself in the way you dress or act. Be smart with your hairdressing decisions.

Snooki’s No-No’s

June 24, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Once the hit reality show Jersey Shore hit television back in 2009, there was a lot of controversy. Whether or not the language, dancing and general actions of these “characters” were appropriate. Along with that controversy came the old trend of the poof. Nicole Snooki Polizzi brought back the style that many women used to style in their hair. This was the trend of the huge poof created by back combing. However, Snooki threw her own little modern twist on the style and brought her own chatter into the mix. Is this actually a good style for your hair or does it do more harm than good?

This isn’t a blog about Snooki giving out her no-no’s. This is a blog pointing out her no-no’s that she does to herself. First off, she may look cute and little and spunky, but Snooki is putting her body in danger in so many ways. It’s probably obvious to everyone but herself, too. Let’s begin with the orange skin she likes to sport. At the Jersey Shore, everyone likes to “GTL” or gym, tan, laundry. However, by looking at this celebrity, you’d think all she does is “TTT” tan, tan, and tan some more. How awful could that be for her skin? And now that the rumors are proven to be true, let’s hope she doesn’t tan while she’s pregnant! Looks like she should step away from the tanning before she damages her baby’s and her own life.

Teasing her hair isn’t in as much danger as her skin but she still needs to cool it with the backcombing. Snooki’s hair could be in some serious trouble in the next twenty years if she continues to poof it every day. Even if she doesn’t wear the signature poof at the crown all the time, she does so much teasing to her hair that could last a year if she didn’t shower. By the time she turns sixty years old, she might not have much hair to backcomb and style if she’s not careful.

Maybe Snooki could go back in time a little and reverse the use of her backcombing each day. She could even sport a fun little bob. After all, if she’s going to be a mom, she’ll need a “mom cut” to match; bring on the hair shears for Snooki! To turn her life around as a good mom, she’ll need to get rid of the orange skin and scary mess that she might call “hair and that shall conclude Snooki’s no-no’s.

Hair Appropriate For Professional Pictures

June 24, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Special events like weddings or senior pictures deserve a special outfit and hairstyle. When you look your best, pictures look most presentable. Face it, you don’t see a picture of a graduate wearing sweats, hair in a ponytail and glasses with no makeup. That’s not normal for a picture that means so much in the long run. Some of the best pictures are taken when hair looks its best, ask any girl. It truly isn’t hard to style your hair for special event pictures, you just need to know the appropriate styles for them and how to achieve those styles.

As a senior in high school, you have so many responsibilities and things to prepare for. One of the items on your agenda are your senior pictures. Most kids get theirs taken about the summer between their junior and senior year in high school. This is a time where students look their best for a few pictures to be displayed at their graduation party and also to give out as memorabilia to friends and family. Obviously kids wouldn’t want to be known for looking sloppy and as if they don’t care. That’s why senior pictures are so important- teenagers want others to remember them in ten years as looking sharp, not sloppy.

The most appropriate hairstyle for a senior picture would be to just straighten it and let it hang over your shoulders. It looks the most professional and it won’t be too over the top. You could also curl your hair but typically when your hair is curled, you can have a little more frizz and flyaways that can stand out. When you use a hair straightener, you are more less likely to have those stubborn stray hairs showing in your pictures.

Weddings are the exact same way, except even more important. It doesn’t help to have an awful hair day on the biggest day of your life. Women want to look absolutely stunning in their wedding pictures and why not? In ten years when you and your husband look back at the pictures, you’ll want to think, “Wow we made great memories that day” after seeing a beautiful style surrounded by gorgeous makeup and perfect hair. You don’t want to be thinking “Remember how awful that day was because my hair kept falling out?”

For a wedding day, the appropriate style to sport would be an updo. To keep all that hair out of your face and look the most glamourous, you definitely need to have a high bun or some kind of style to keep hair clear of your face. Most importantly, your best features are in the face- your eyes, your nose, your cheekbones. And when you let your hair hang in your face on the most important day of your life, those beautiful features are hidden.

These are just a couple of those important events in life where you should actually care what you look like. Some might say “oh it’s just a picture!” but it’s true when they say that a picture is worth a thousand words. What you look like in your pictures can reflect how that day went or how you acted at that time.

The Woman With Dreads

June 15, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

If you’re a fan of the television show What Not To Wear, you’ve surely seen the episode from one of the first few seasons with the most memorable guest star. There was once a woman on this styling show that needed a new wardrobe to update her look but she also needed a new hairstyle. She claimed to have gone thirteen years without washing her hair and had plenty of knots in her hair; knots that we like to call dreadlocks. Now usually this kind of hairstyle is popular with African Americans but for this Caucasian woman, it was kind of style that was easy and best for her hair type.

Now if you aren’t sure how dreadlocks are created, you may want to prepare yourself for this gross fact. It may not be true for all occasions of growing “dreads” but the woman on What Not To Wear says she went thirteen years without washing her hair! That’s thirteen years people! If we all went that long, we’d want to go crazy and some people just can’t handle going anymore than a day without washing their hair.

This woman is brave to have let her hair go into such a turmoil just to make a fashion statement. Most people mistake dreadlocks for very tight braids woven together. But really a dreadlock is just a certain amount of hair that hasn’t been cared for and eventually has turned into a matted clump of hair. Very bad for your hair is a good definition of a dreadlock.

People who don’t use hair scissors regularly or a shower even can create dreadlocks. If they like it, more power to them, but when they get sick of that style it’s going to be so much harder to get rid of the dreads. A good cleanse every other day at least and a refreshing brush-through of your hair will keep your hair in good health.

If you do decide to let your hair grow into a matted mess of dreadlocks, you could be setting yourself up for pure damage that could be permanent. On the episode of What Not To Wear, the stylist on the show decided it was time for those dreadful locks to go bye-bye! The only problem was, they were extremely hard to cut through. A typical haircut would take a small pair of sharp shears and just a quick few sweeps through the hair. However, this kind of cut took much longer and needed special shears to get the job done right. Even after the woman washed her hair and got all of the dreads cut out, her hair didn’t look as shiny and healthy as a woman’s hair without dreads.

Without knowing, this could be very harmful on your hair if you’re not careful. Watch what you do before you make the decision to get dreadlocks. This kind of style could change the look, texture and maybe even smell of your hair forever.

John Frieda Knows Hair

We’ve all seen the hair products on the market for John Frieda. His products are usually for some kind of frizz control and to help tame the beast in our hair. Lots of women buy his special serums over any other frizz products because of the name behind the product. Why wouldn’t you buy a product from one of the most well-known and knowledgeable hairstylists in the world?

Although Frieda’s most popular products are mainly focused on frizz, it doesn’t mean he just works with frizzy hair. As a stylist, he knows he must be well-rounded in many areas of hair like cutting, coloring, repairing, etc. So where does he begin with helping his clients? The expertise and how to get to perfection of course.

One of John Frieda’s most popular products is the serum for frizz. He began with this line because of the amount of humidity in the air and the amount of frizz women experience. It can be extremely frustrating when you try to use a straightener and all you get is a bunch of strands poking out every which way your hair falls. Frieda realizes no one wants their hair to look like that so he came out with not only a serum, but a whole line of products to help control frizz. That line now contains a shampoo, conditioner, a heat protection spray, and a lightweight spray to prevent frizz for days.

Another reason Frieda has so much fame is thanks to his line of products called Sheer Blonder. This line creates a new look for women whose roots are too overpowering for their blonde locks. Many women are looking to go lighter when summertime leaves. You see, in the summer women can easily sit in the sun and let it lighten up their ends as well as their roots. However, some need a little boost and that’s what these products are for. The whole package includes shampoo, conditioner and a lightening spray which can be applied before you use your straightener.

There are many kinds of lines from the John Frieda collection and they all have different goals. Whether you need a little help with styling, lightening up, repairing damage, or preserving colors, there are many different products that will match what you need. You can always trust John Frieda, the expert stylist for all things hair when you’re looking for great styles.

Celebrity Hair Review: Katy Perry

June 8, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

One of my favorite artists is Katy Perry. She is ever-growing and lets nothing slow her down; it makes everyone love her even more. Another part of her that everyone loves is her spunky and edgy sense of style. When she first came out with her hit single “I Kissed A Girl” we were all in shock that someone would write a song about that but then as she became more famous and got even more comfortable in Hollywood, she started changing a few other things about her. For example, she started dressing in things like bras that shoot out whipped cream and started dying her hair different shades of pink and purple-even if they were wigs, we all learned to love her a little bit more.

Let’s face it, it’s so hard to get recognized in Hollywood today and Katy had her own way of doing so. Some of her songs have been considered borderline crazy-she falls in love with an alien in one song, she sings about kissing another girl and even has a song about sexual terms but that’s what kept her in touch with record companies-it kept them guessing. As fans, we’re also always guessing and wondering what she will do next with her fun yet kooky style.

Recently, Katy Perry filmed a movie about herself called Katy Perry: Part of Me. Although it’s not in theatres yet, in the previews you see many different hairstyles and colors that she sports and it may make you wonder a few things. How does she have such pretty hair after so many different styles and transformations? It’s so true, her hair is absolutely perfect and it never looks like there’s a strand out of place. Now of course she has a stylist that can make her hair look like brand new each day and she probably wears wigs half the time but sometimes it is her real hair that is colored blue or hot pink. And how does she keep such healthy hair?

That’s just it, she has a stylist. There are some people that aren’t celebrities dye who their hair almost once a week and their hair will never look as good as Katy Perry’s. She inspires many people today because of her fun hair but the difference between our hair and her hair is that she pays someone thousands of dollars a year to make it look stunning and completely non-damaged. Whereas we can barely afford a cut and color every month or so. I would be willing to be that if Katy Perry showed her true hair, without extensions, without any hair dye in it, she would have very damaged and dull hair because of all the things she puts it through.

Katy Perry is one of the greatest artists of our time and we all envy her for her stunning performances and appearance. Although I do love her hair, the damage she’s done between dying and styling, I don’t envy her for. The use of a straightener is evident in her hair each time you see her and although it’s not necessarily a bad thing, it can be bad after so long. Katy better watch how she styles her hair-it could come back to haunt her.

The Kind Of Ponytail Holders To Use

June 6, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

There are myths that say when you put your hair in a ponytail, you can damage your hair. If you ever notice your hair to be more frizzy than normal, it means you have split ends. Those split ends could be caused by the overuse of a ponytail holder. There are many kinds of holders and depending on the kind you use, your damage can vary. This means the myths are true but it depends on the material of your ponytail.

When we wear our hair in a ponytail to work out or clean around the house every once in a while, it’s fine on your hair. The scary damage comes when you repeatedly wear your hair in a ponytail (high or low do). Especially with a ponytail made out of something other than cloth. There are a few different kinds of material that ponytail holders can be made out of but some are more damaging than others.

You know how some people tighten their ponytail by grabbing two sections of hair in the pony and tugging in opposite directions? That’s the thing that causes most damage. A cloth material around a ponytail can’t do much damage because it has the fibers to softly rub against your hair without tearing your hair to shreds. Even when you tighten your pony it won’t create as many split ends as other materials would.

Some people decide to wear a different kind of ponytail with a holder made out of a rubber material. There are many kinds of ponytail holders available now that claim to keep your hair in place so you don’t have to worry about your hair falling out during a run. Although this may be true, the rubber material still pulls at your hair because it sticks to the strands rather than rubbing swiftly against like cloth. With so much pull on your hair with one little rubber band, these kinds of pony tail holders could create just as much damage as a hair straightener.

So even if you’re worried about your hair falling out during a run, your best choice may be a cloth covered ponytail holder for your bun or pony. Try using a holder that won’t overstretch and maybe even use a few bobby pins to keep it all secure. Although it may be more work, it will cause less damage in the long run and you’ll be thanking your ponytail holder.
